This is going into my 78 GS1000. It fits fine, but I wanted to see if anyone has seen it before or knows what it is or who made it?

It is a billet aluminum basket with the heavy duty welded backing plate and springs:

It uses the stock inner sleeve hub and pressure disk (where you install the steel plates and fiber plates), but the plates and fibers that came with it are a bit smaller in diameter than the stock ones. The stock plates/fibers won't fit inside the basket. And also, the steel plates that came with it don't have any dimples in them. Is that normal?

Stock stuff is on the left:

I'd like to try and figure out what I have here, so that I can order replacement fibers and/or steel plates if I need to. The ones that came with the clutch seem fine. In fact, the plates and fibers are a bit thicker than the stock ones.

Any ideas?

Looks just like an early model GS750. The part numbers for the steels and fibers are different.

Stock gear. What makes you think its a billet basket and not just a stock one turned down? With the stock gear, bike must have been pretty slow that it was on. So may have been someones attempt to just lighten one up. Maybe a turned down 1100 basket on 1000 gear?

I had seen a few guys run Kaw baskets on GS gears. Just a mess.

Plate on right looks like FBG. Not sure on the steels, we always just use the stock ones.

Yeah, the stock plates are too wide. They won't fit in this basket. I don't know what the 1100 clutch looks like, but here's a stock 1000 basket.

Looks like the inside bottom of the stock 1100 basket has the same casting marks that the 1000 has. The clutch I have is smooth on the bottom. So I don't think it's a stock basket that's been turned down.

If it is billet, I would call MTC and Falicon. My guess is it was one of the two.

Did you compare it with an 1100 plate?

The 1100 uses the same clutch plates as the 1000G & yes they are slightly smaller than the skunks.... If I remember rightly about 5 or 6mm total diameter smaller.

Dan :)

Looks like a casting to me. Inside is the giveaway since it doesn't look anything like a hog-out part.

What's difference (other than the style) of the inside of this one compared to mine?

The insides look the same to me.

Maybe I'll never know for sure what it is. I was most interested in replacement parts. I'll measure eveything and figure it out.

The ones I have are very smooth with no casting marks. They all appear to have been shot peened or something on the inside. The two I have from MTC are both plated. The Falicon one I have is a natural color. All have SC gears. MTC with MTC gear and Falicon with Falicon gears. My friends sliders are all MTC. These are all coated black. My MTCs are not sliders and both are a very dark green color.

The MTCs are in the two engines right now but I took a closeup of the Falicon for you looking at the inside so you could see the texture. Hope this helps.

Yours could be billet, I can't tell from the pictures.

I hunted around a did find this picture which shows three of my baskets. The one on the left is one of the MTC parts. The center one is something that was given to me. I don't know who made it for sure. One on right is a beefed up GS1150 basket with stock basket. Notice the cast marks.

Here is another shot from the rear of three baskets. Top is a beefed up GS1150 basket. Right is the beefed up stock GS1100 basket with the weled in tangs. Left is one of the MTC parts.

Notice that the MTC part is welded up. The is because I had John do this one for me, not MTC.

My other MTC basket is not welded and the backing plate is a little different design.

I had one from Star at one time that was also billet. This one had STAR welded into the backing plate. I may still have that thing tucked away. This one is also a natural color.

Forgive the poor edit on your photo Bruce but you should get the idea. Those radii details would be extremely difficult to duplicate by machining a block of billet.

This photo looks like a casting too. Those curved radii would be very hard to produce through machining.

You would have to call them to see what they use to cut them. The gears I have that are billet have much tighter curves than the baskets. Sharp edges and high stress don't get along.

I looked over my pictures to see if I had anything that showed the inside of the MTC with that sort of close-up. Nada. Maybe this weekend I can take the camera to the shop. I am sure the slider is cut the same as the normal one. We will have some on the shelf, easy to get to.

Jay would be a good source for this info but I don't know if he has the time or knows how to use a digital camera to get a close up of some of their work. How about it Jay?

When I said a casting, I was referring to the one on the orange chair. The one in the first photo is a forged basket. From the looks of the back, we may have built it.
