Help please! - Engine mounting bolt - GS 1100 L

Hi Folks,

Firstly - thanks for a great website - I was really glad to find it!

I have only recently added a motorcycle endorsement to my licence (something I had been meaning to do for a long time!), and have bought my first bike - a 1982 GS 1100 L!

While I have been able to enjoy it a little, I have discovered a few things that need fixing (stator, speedo drive and I found that the pilot screws on the carb still had their caps fitted (runs much better now!))

I have discovered that one of the engine mounting bolts is missing. This is on the left side of the frame, just under where the stator sits. Also, I think there might be a bracket missing, as the engine guard bar lower attachment just sits in free space, quite a long way from the frame. (On the right side, there are 2 bolts that go onto the frame along with a bracket that the engine guard bar attaches to.) On the left side it just looks like a single bolt goes through the frame and into the engine.

Can anyone please tell me what bolt I need to get to replace it, and if I am missing a bracket that the engine guard bar attaches to?

If it helps, I'll take some photos tomorrow in the day time.

Many thanks in advance,

Argee

You're missing a triangle like piece that fits on the frame, two bolts to hold that on, a bolt that goes through the engine and a strange nut shaped like a teardrop that the engine bolt threads into. It has a strange shape so it doesn't spin after it's threaded.

Thanks Chef,

That's what I've got on the right side, but I'm pretty sure that on the left side there is only one bolt hole through the frame - not 2!
Of course, I could be being dull!!

I've just been out and taken a photo - hopefully I've just attached it to this post. It's definitely different to the right side. The tab is welded to the frame. I'm wondering now if the engine guard bar might be bent and that it should match up with this bolt hole.

Oh heck!! I've only gone and mixed up the photos!! This one's the right side!!

Here's the right side with the triangular plate that's bolted to the frame, and the engine guard bar that lines up with the engine mounting bolt.

Doh!!! This is the photo of the left side with the missing bolt!

I have a spare nut and lots of extra bolts. If you can tell me the bolt length you need I should have one.

Nessism, you are a star! Once I find out, I'll let you know! Thanks!!

Drop me a PM when you get to that point. And if using engine guards, you need an extra long bolt.

You may need to loosen the remaining bolts and wiggle things around to get holes to align up !!

I've just discovered that despite being badged differently, I actually own a Suzuki GS 1100 GL!

Yeah, they didn't bother to put the G on the sidecovers. GL denotes shaft "L". There was an earlier chain-driven L (16 valves) but not in 1982. You'll learn all sorts of trivia here but not stuff you'll see in a game of Trivial Pursuit.

Many many thanks to Nessism!

Many many thanks to Nessism!

Thank you very much Nessism!

I have received the bolt, and with a little assistance from my charcoal bbq to persuade the engine guard bar to return to its original shape, it is now doing the job!

:D
