help with relay mod

I bought a 4 pin relay(that's all that I could find). I wired the 30 pin to ground. Then I wired the 85 pin to the positive lead on the starter relay. Then I cut the orange/black hot wire before it went into the Y splice that fed into the coils and spliced the 87 pin wire to that. Now I am not sure what to do with the other cut end of that orange black/wire. And I don't know what to hook the 86 pin on the relay to. My bike had the kill switch bypassed in the switch when I bought it. And it had the Dyna S ignition installed.

Yes I did, but I still haven't been able to figure it out. What is the point of the relay anyway? What is triggering it? The kill switch? Mine is bypassed. I've got positive going into the relay, ground going into the relay, positive going out of the relay to the coils, ground goes to the dyna s from the coils. So what is supposed to trigger the relay? That is what I am confused about.

relay

the hot wire + which originally went to the coils that is the trigger

the coil wires you cut should go to 87. they give your coils 12v from the battery.

So I take the other end of the orange/black wire that I cut that is now hanging loose and hook that up to the 86 trigger pin.

Thanks! I've got 12.5 volts at the battery and 11.2 at the coils after the mod. Is that where I should be? Where is the primary and where is the secondary on the coils by the way?

You want help in person with that? :-k

You are only about half an hour away from me, I can come over after work one day this week and help you with that. :D

Drop me a PM or e-mail with contact info, we'll work it out.

Those numbers do not seem right... I went from 10.2v at the coil to 12.3V Have you cleaned your existing grounds or better yet....put in some extra grounds?...bad grounding is the silent killer....

on a 4-prong | connections are pretty basic Trigger, Power, Ground, connection to both coils.... only reason for a 5 shot would be if you do not have a headlight switch and it comes on with the key on. Roomates 550 is like that but not for long...

The linked diagrams should fill you in, do not feel bad though I had to have it explained to me to have any idea what I was doing. Been there....

John, your wiring, if this is still accurate, is not quite correct. Neither is your voltage at the coils. It should be the following:
85 - Ground (the original post said you have it to the positive lead on the starter)
86 - Trigger (the orange/black, which I believe you now have connected)
87 - to coils, where the orange/black wire used to be
30 - to 12V power supply, which you are using from the starter relay.

Your current wiring reverses the power and the ground, which I personally do not recommend.
When checking your voltages, you should verify the voltage at the source (the starter relay) and the destination (the coils). They should be virtually identical, and you reported 1.3V drop from the battery, which indicates a problem. If you used 12 gauge wire for the power, I would expect a maximum .2V drop for the distances involved.
There could be a voltage drop between the starter relay and the battery, which you may wish to investgate as well. And as Kcwiro stated, you should troubleshoot the grounds as well.

As a side note, terminals 30 & 87 can be swapped, since when the relay is activated it acts as a straight-thru connection. However, it could lead to confusion later if using a 5 terminal relay, which has a 87a terminal also. For a 5 terminal relay, 87 is supplied power from 30 when the relay is activated by the switch, 87a is supplied power from 30 when the relay is not activated by the switch.

My offer of a personal visit still stands, and I have sent a PM. Hopefully he sees it and responds. :o

Hey Steve, can you come over and wire up the Accel coils on my GPz810 for me? ;) ;)
Just kidding, but John should certainly take you up on that offer.

If I was closer to HOME, yeah, I'd do it, but, depending on where he is in Lakeland, I am only about a half hour away.

If you do not feel comfortable doing your wiring, there are some good guys there in Indy that can help, but not sure if they would want to dirty their hands on a GPz. After all, it's not a GS. :D

Steve I just got your message will pm you after writing this. Thanks, I'll correct the relay wiring according to koolaid's specs. Also my voltage drop after the mod was due to the ground at the coils. When I grounded the meter up to the frame I got full voltage, so I'll rework the relay ground today.

I was just joshing. I am extremely comfortable with wiring, trust me (hence the winks, Brian understands). And I may allow bwringer the honor of riding it someday, IDK. He's dissed me twice on my offer to help remedy the paint disaster that is his cage. ;)

Yep John and I spoke on the phone a little bit ago. There is a hands-on session set for 3/20. :D

Me, too. :D

You think I would actually ride a couple of hours through the heart of Indiana just to wire the coils on a Kaw?

Actually, I have been know to do such a thing, so it's not really all that far-fetched. :-\\\

Hi Mr. johnhend,

I'm glad somebody noticed that the #30 pin goes to the 12v source and NOT ground. Here's all of the info I've collected for relay mods. You might find it interesting. Read this and you can make sure Mr. Steve does it correctly. ;) :D
