    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

high mileage oil

I know there are a million oil threads but other than a fork seal thread, non touched on High mileage oil.


It appears that Mobil one by me only comes in high mileage form now 10W-40.

I was wondering if it would swell the clutch linings at all and if anyone has had any bad results with using high mileage oil on a bike.
 
I think you would be fine. The "High Milage" business sounds like marketing gobbly gook to me. You may as well compare the price to Mobil 1 motorcycle oil while you are at it. I don't think it will make much if any difference but if the price is the same it seems like an obvious choice.
 
Actually there is something to the "high mileage" thing. It has additives designed to swell seals. I'd avoid it.
 
Oh man, I hadn't thought of that! I was going to switch over to it at the next oil change too! Nuts... so much for a $20 mobile one oil change. Time to google that problem....

I found Mobil 1 15W-50 synthetic at CostCo last week for $30 for a box of 6 quarts. It has the red cap and is not marked high mileage or energy conserving.

I loved this stuff -- it's a superb motorcycle oil -- but I thought they stopped making it a couple of years ago.

Have I stumbled across a dusty pallet of leftovers (and therefore I need to go back and stock up pronto), or have they started making it again?
 
I have put the high mileage to the test and it does help slow leaks.

My biggest fear is that whatever the special agent is that swells fiberous materials will negatively affect the clutch.

Perhaps I will stick with either Castrol GTX 10-40 as my pop has used all of his bikes life, or Rotella 15W-40 blue or white jug.

I've had great success with Castrol so far, so perhaps I will stick with that.

I just wanted to raise awareness about the possible high mileage oil swelling/ruing clutch fibers. Not saying that I proven it has, I was looking for someone who has tried it to disprove my theory.
