    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hose that ran to airbox from engine

i have mine unfiltered right now, i guess it would be better to have filter on there, theres much cheaper filters than k&n try denniskirk or jc whitney

Its probably a crank case vent that runs from the top of the engine rocker box cover--I guess any how. i think that some bikes even run the gas tank vent to the air box also--i theenk
 
yeah i got that gas tank vent tube too I guess I will just zip tie that to the frame or something to that nature.

I guess i will put a filter on that crankcase tube cause it wouldn't hurt.

It would be cool if I could just plug the filter into the hole. That would look kinda trick. How do you go about measuring diameter those hoses? do you measure from inside wall to inside wall or outside to outside?

I believe that all hoses are measured from the inside diameter
 
Your engine will build up water and gasoline in the oil if you only run it for short trips. The point of that vent is to allow the extra fluids in the oil to boil off through when you go on a long run. I've had to blow mine out because it was full of foamy condensation which could cause a problem for you. I would have something hold the filter at the highest point of the hose so that anything that doesn't quite boil off goes back into the engine otherwise the filter will plug up.

IS THE FILTER REALLY NECESSARY??
 
Most racers just put the unfiltered end of it into some kind of a catch bottle, like a baby bottle or something. A filter isn't a bad idea for the street though, especially if you happen to ride down a dusty road. Absolutely don't plug it or seal the container. A friend of mine did this, oil pressure built up and gaskets started leaking. I think his exhaust smoked also.

Racing rules require catch can, you must have a filter it vents the crankcase, the filter also will keep dirt out
 
ok sounds like i need to buy that filter then.

Well I got the machine all put back together tonight and put gas in the tank. It took a while to fire it up since it has been dry for months. It finally fired with a huge flame!! :twisted: I don't have my exhaust pipes on yet cause I'm still waiting for tires(makes it easier with exhaust off) Then I noticed gas was leaking out of the carbs! uhh oh so I shut off the bike fast before it blew up.

I guess I need a rebuild kit after all for the carbs the seals well ain't so great. I got the leak down to very small run now. Since both tires are off the bike is angled pretty far forward so maybe thats why its leaking, but I doubt it. O well Thanks for all the help
 
You say you started it without the exhaust? Can't wait to hear what you're going to do next.
 
Use a long section of hose and get the end of it as far back as you can, preferably behind the rear wheel. Tie it to the top rail of the rear subframe out of sight. Over time the smoke that escapes through it will make an oily mess.

I saw these K&N crankcase vent things at dennis kirk maybe I could clamp on one of those to the hose.

The hose vents the crankcase and it needs to be there and open. On later model cars it had all sorts of vacuum valves to control its operation.

The filter you have there will allow the crankcase pressure to vent but will filter any dust from coming in, but this is not usually a problem. The real problem comes when oily smoke condenses in the tube and slowly runs out and smears over your battery cover or somewhere, and also clogs the filter.

You can make an oil catch can easily. Extend the hose with some black PVC garden watering system hose. Bring it down behind the motor, under the battery case and above the swing arm pivot.

Find a metal or plastic container like a half size Coke can, something with a screw lid is fine. Bring the vent hose through the lid, down to the bottom. Cut the hose into a V shape at the end so it doesn't close off against the bottom of the can. Stuff the can full of stainless steel kitchen scrubbing pads. Push another hose through the lid but have it in the top area of the can. Take this hose up under the rear wheel arch and tie it off near the end of the rear mudguard.

This hose will vent the gas but any oil will condense in the can against the steel wool and drip to the bottom. You can unscrew the lid every month or so, depending on riding distances etc, and empty it out - not back into your motor as it has water vapour condensed in it as well.

I left mine open for a while. It sprays oil vapor on the top of the engine. Also when I came home after a ride I smelled like exhaust/ oil (according to my GF). I ran a hose to an old NOS Octane Booster bottle. Everyone has to double take when they see the bright blue bottle sticking out from behind the side cover.


Oh, by the way if you seal the catch can make sure to drill a couple holes in the top. It will pressurize and blow the hose out.
