    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How do I get this thing going after carb cleaning?

I just got done cleaning the carbs on my 81 GS850L, but I have no idea about the process of priming it to get it started. I assume the carbs are empty, I mean of course they are. But what steps do I take from here? I know to put the petcock in the prime position, but do I crank the throttle a bunch of times or something to get fuel in the carbs? So far it just cranks and cranks, but does not start. All hoses and lines are connected properly.

As a side note, this forum is incredible. You all seem to offer great advice. Thanks

If the petcock is working properly the carbs should fill with the motor off and no cranking in the prime position. It's probably just starting technique if everything else is right. Use full choke and don't crack the throttle.
 
I bet I just flooded the #*@! out of it. I'll give it a try later today. Thanks for the info Billy.

prime, choke, stand on my head and wear my starter out.

The only way I've ever been able to get my bike to run after all the gas
is out of my bowls is to fill them up (manual petcock "on" position)
remove one of the chrome covers on the airbox and spray the
intakes to the carbs with starter spray (ether).

Make sure and replace the cover before starting!

But I thought I had to have the petcock in the prime position to get the gas into the carbs. With the petcock in the "on" position will they get the gas into the empty carbs? Thanks for the help

yeah, I stated manual petcock.
If you have an automatic petcock you will need
to put it on prime.
Use the spray and put it on full choke after you've had it on prime
for 30 seconds then switch it to the on position brfore hiting the start button.
