A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I've got a bike that is in great shap mechanically....a 1979 GS850...BUT the metal parts are kinda dingy looking. The tank and sides I can paint, but how about those engince/ clutch covers...any advice on restoring their luster, or do I need to buy new ones?

I've just started on mine. If you do a search you'll find a couple different ways. They both involve stripping the preexisting clear coat that's there. One involves various grade of steel wool. I am going the wet sanding method... Start at 400, then 800, 1000, 1500, and 2000, followed by metal polish until it shines. Then wax

I sent ya pm on how i did mine.

Screamin, you did it using the steel wool right? Interested in hearing how you did it

Some more incentive to make 'em shiny.:)

Yep, Keith has the ultimate shine!8-) He was my inspiration.

Be careful when polishing your engine. Chances are, it won't stop there. You'll become an addict!

Im hoping I can make my cases look HALF as good as some of the stuff I see here. and Im not looking to do the whole engine..just the cases and caps... but we shall see!

How did you get the "Suzuki" round symbol to shine? How did you remove the black paint? Is it aluminum under that paint?

I just buffed it like everything else. The emblem is aluminum but I'm not sure it's 100% aluminum. It actually polishes up a bit better than the cases.
I first tried masking off the emblem and just wanted to polish the raised lettering. After doing so, I removed the tape and the black came up with it. I was pretty mad until I started polishing the whole emblem and saw that it still looked good. So that wasn't my plan but it turned out OK.
