    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How does the airbox get any air?

Bike: 81 GS650G

I have the original airbox installed back onto a bike which the PO had put pods on. There appears to be no openings to the air filter once the lid is put on the box. How exactly is this supposed to work? :confused: How does any air actually get pulled into the air filter? From a pure observation perspective it looks like the flow would be seriously choked.

I have not tried running the bike yet with the lid or a filter on yet (just got bike rebuilt and running recently and waiting for air filter)
 
The airbox should have an opening in the rear. On my 1978, the box had a rectangular opening in back about 6" wide and 1" high. It was supposed to have a rubber snorkel that attached there to shift the air source up by about 3-4".

But I ditched the airbox for pods, as I am a heretic, you see.

'Concerned', no. Just curious. If the thing bogs once I put the filter and lid on then I will think about some options such as putting a blacked-out screen over the airbox cover possibly. We'll see. :lol:

If the thing bogs once you put the filter and lid on fix your carburetors.
 
1- The airbox should only suck air into the BOTTOM portion where the filter resides. Even if there is no hole at the bottom back (which there should be) the air can enter through the breather baffle at the base of the box. This is normally to collect filter oil runoff and any moisture that collects in the box and drains it out the left hand side.

2- Ensure your filter has a foam gasket above it. Weather stripping foam with a little 30w oil on it works perfectly.

3- If your cover gaskets are cracked, non existant, or pop off the airbox... get new ones and epoxy or silicone them in place on the box.

If you find you do have an opening but are missing the rubber snorkle.. i have one for you. Itbasically makes thebox pull air from thetop of the battery under the seat.

You need an eye test! There are multiple slots on top of airfilter box on side facing battery- apparently enough to enable 65 hp. When/if I take my airbox off,I'm planning to add another slot down low facing rear fender- I figure generating turbulence will improve gas mileage 1 mpg.

I don't understand your cynicism. How is it that you have such an attagonistic attitude toward a situation/specific bike you know generally nothing about? When i finally find a filter I am sure it will run well. Especially with all the work I have put into it, which includes tearing the carbs apart and rebuilding them.

I was simply curious how this bike's airflow worked. I'll reserve my other comments.

ignore that idiot, just fit the filter and see how it runs, then go from there. if you get any more problems then ask for some more advice from people who know what they are talking about
 
After some further inspection, there are some openings on top/back of box. Admittedly, I missed this. :oops:
For some reason I did not think that was part of the intake that led directly to the filter when I was installing it. For the record i am going to blame this on very little sleep. I have two boys, whom I love dearly, but require a lot of time (which is fine and I enjoy) right now (3 year old and 7 month old). Some of my mind may have been lost in last couple years. LOL!

Better questions to come in future, promise. Wow.

What I wanna know is how the airbox is so sensitive to leaks but there's a plastic nipple thing with hole in the bottom of the box for draining (after the air filter). At least that's how it is on my 550. An old oring or bad boot can cause lots of headaches but not a big hole??

O-rings and boots are after the carbs, where a leak will really upset the mixture that is going to the engine.

Leaks in the airbox matter more if they are after the filter. Anything before the filter will also have an affect, but not nearly as much.
