A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How does this happen?

By the way the stator is from a company called "Caltric" out of California.
I went ahead and ordered a used one from Cannibal Cycle which appeared in good condition. Almost like new.
Caltric verified that they indeed messed up and are sending another replacement. I figure between the two I'll get the right one and have another on hand for...idk...maybe selling or using if the new stator is bunk from one or the other.

Did you ever consider doing a Quick Test?

yup, quick test and a full go through of the stator pages was done. the results pointed to the stator. i will note though, this was after a lot of running the engine and riding with it plugged in wrong.

But obviously I did the test after plugging it in right and changing all the grounds and cleaning the connections.

If you would report on your 6 numbers for the Quick Test we might be able to offer some help.

Ran into some delays (girlfriend related XD) on testing the charging system but will test tonight when I get home from work. I received my new stator today. Looks exactly the same as the presumed bad one, however with one difference.

It has three wires coming out (normal) and two of the female connections are the right ones to fit the RR male bullet style wires. The third however, appears to accommodate two male connections. I'm incredibly confused. Will it matter if nothing is plugged into the other side of the third connection? Can post picture later for clarification.

I've hear something about some stators having a 4th series for some non-vital purpose. Could this be what this is?

I have seen stators coming with an extra wire. It is probably for a headlamp cutout. The newer bikes have circuity to not power the headlamp unless there is AC coming out of the stator.

I also cut those connectors off and solder the wires directly to whatever you have coming from the R/R.

Definitely planning on soldering once I get this charging issue put to rest. However, this stator came off the same bike as mine but with only about 5000 miles. So the weirdest part is that its not off a new bike. However it could have been aftermarket to begin with made recently so who knows. The mystery continues.

Quick test results are in:

1. 13.22
2. 12.07
3. 12.1
4. 12.11
5. 12.09
6. 12.5 initially then rises gradually.

Absolutely no charging, with good battery. I guess that's why you bought the stator. It is probably the problem, you might do the Leg to Ground tests at 5K RPM (they are most reliable) to see if there is a short which is most likely. Except I see you have a 550. You sure you have the correct number of poles. IIRC the old were 16 pole and the new 18 pole. Maybe someone can chime in on the count.

Is the leg to ground testing whether the stator wires show a resistance with the negative multimeter wire on the crank case? Because they all show a resistance.

Leg to ground will show AC voltage if there is insulation breakdown to the case. Should be Zero VAC at 5000 rpm

I am happy to report that after replacement of the stator, my charging system is charging sufficiently now.

Thanks for all your help! I am one happy camper.
