    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

how long should the vent hoses be?

I am putting the carbs for my 82 GL 1100 GL back together tomorrow and I thought I might just replace the vent hoses...The ones that are on them now, are not long enough to hang down the back of the air box...What length are they normally? Should they hang down as far as the battery vent hose? or does it even matter? the ones that are on there now are, 16 inches or 40.64 cm.

On that, and similar, bikes, I have never even seen them reach the bottom of the airbox.

They should terminate in relatively calm air, not the rush that would be under the oil pan.

If you have a retainer loop on the back of the right side of the air box, route them both through it,
but you will need to have the left hose a couple inches longer than the right one.

Ok, that make sense. I couldn't see why they weren't longer, and I have seen other photos and they didn't look that long.
 
Make sure the overflows route to a position such that if they began to dump fuel, it won't wind up on the hot exhaust or the rear tire.

Would be nice, but the BS carbs on his 1100GL do not have overflows.

I have only seen overflow tubes on the VM carbs on a GS.

My BS34's have vent hose's that effectively work as over flows. Are the 1100G bikes different?
 
Well, the 1100GL has BS34s, too, so they are probably the same.

On the VM carbs, there is a tube up the middle of the float bowl that sits just above the normal fuel level and will act very nicely as an overflow preventer. On the BS carbs, fuel has to get quite a bit above "normal" level to get to the vent tubes. By then, you will have fuel flowing quite freely down the carb throat into the cylinder.
