    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I am planning on a top end rebuild at a workshop,on GS 850G. Can anyone help with a ballpark price I should expect to pay for parts and labour.
 
What is your definition of a top end rebuild? New psitons? If you ask 10 people you will get 10 different answers - what's yours? And why are you doing this - any specific symptoms? Or, do you just want more power?
 
How Much Money

The bike is blowing smoke,not a lot but after you open her up for a bit she blows a bit.The gaskets on the top end are leaking quite a bit. Any sugestions on the cheapest way out would be appreciated.
 
If you are having the valves ground, the seats resurfaced, and the cylinders honed you are looking at approximately 3 or 4 hours shop time at the most. If you are also having a ridge removed or boring the cylinders the time will go up accordingly. Removing a ridge adds about 1/2 hour and boring adds a couple of hours. The actual time to do the boring is actually pretty short but the set up is what takes the time.

It?s really hard to give a cost estimate because even here locally the shop rates vary from about $18 an hour to $45 an hour depending on where I take work. One of the shops that I think does really good work and has a good turn around time has a $24/hr shop rate. It is a small family owned shop that doesn't do big commercial jobs. The big shops that can handle the contract work charge premium prices and have high set up fees in addition to the hourly charge. These places will often not take small jobs except through a deal to motorcycle shop that has a contract with them for machining service.

These estimates are just from my personnel experience and some things to think about are that if you take a head in to a shop that doesn?t normally do motorcycles chances are you will get a good job but that it will take longer to do so the charges will be higher. There are also shops that specialize in motorcycle machining. The two that I know of here are a little pricey but they are in business to support the competition bikes in the area and are very good about turning work around quickly and when they promise it.
