How to get Melted Sneaker Off Nice Chrome Pipe?

GabrielGoes

Forum Mentor
So today i tried to get it off with 1000 grit sand paper and it already dulled the hell out of the surrounding area taking very little off... i really dont want to ruin the pipe it is one of the few things that are nice on the bike :-& maybe some steel wool and wd40? and also is there anyway to bring back the chrome shine i took out with the 1000 grade paper? i feel like this melted sneaker is gonna be on the pipe FOREVER!!!

Go and get some MEK. Soak a rag, lay it on the pipe for a moment. Wipe off. It'll evaporate quickly. Don't let it get on your paint...it'll etch it.

If you can't find MEK, use PVC primer.

i melted one off my flip flops to my header..made a mess.
no real secret to getting the chrome back to new.
i had to ride to walmart with only one floppers and walk through the store half bear feeted!
man,
they was mys faveret floppers to:(

let me know how it works out for you, I got a BIG black rubber coating on the pipes from my passenger melting her 3inch heals onto the pipe before realizing the peg was up.

I never bothered to do anything about it but the pipes are off for the moment so worth taking off. I was going to just attack it with steal wool and oil.

Try white vinegar and crumpled alum. foil. Not abrasive enough to scratch the chrome but just enough to grab that nasty off the pipe. A plastic scraper might help as well.

Well if you take a moment to think about it how did it get on there. Heat, run the bike got the pipes hot scrape off as much as you can (with a wood scraper). Then let cool, polish off the rest. Have done it a couple of times works good.

Flip flops and sneakers on a motorcycle....am I on the "stretched 'Busa" board? :)

Kidding aside, the PO left a nice black mark on the left exhaust and I used Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound (red) and it came off with some effort.

I usually get the pie hot again and wipe it with a clean old cotton t shirt a few times and get as much off as i can.. then some good brand brake cleaner and some more rags usually gets the rest.

Advise with the pipes hot is good, but for me they are off the bike and on the ground while I wait for new piston rings to arrive so I will give it some good old elbow grease... pics will be in my project thread. I knew when I gave the title weekend project I was jinxing myself, going to be 2 weeks at best now without the bike running... but while Im waiting can clean up stuff like this. Oh and divider rusted out thinking of cutting that and clamping on some straight pipes... might just take it to a welding shop and get a quote. I had some pipes welded on my car pretty cheap.

actually think my neighbor has a welder... I will see if he can help me out on that.

Had a laugh at the sneakers, flip-flops, heels bit also.

If someone is wearing any of the above they are not gettin on my bike

u can use a rasor blade to scrape it off while its cold thats what i had to do and do again lol then try some buffing compound (diamond cut) and hand buff the 1000 grit scratches if that dosent work try a aluminum or stainless polish

I get the pipes hot, spray WD40 on a rag, and rub the shoe goo right off, it may take a few tries but it works awesome ! Steel wool, and razor blades will SURELY trash the chrome finish !

Come on now, you wouldnt take a cutie for a ride with some nice 4" heels oh her boots?

BTW I finally cleaned the mess off of my pipes, I just used a brass wire wheel and called it good enough. It was the least of my pipes issues anyways.

I have used 0000 grade steel wool successfully, for years. It will not harm the chrome, and will remove stuff that is stuck to the pipes very easily.

Balled up alu foil works well. All the little sharp edges will scrub damn near anything, including rust, off the chrome but not damage it, as the alu is softer than the chrome but harder than the rust/shoe goo/ whatever. 0000 steel wool works, but is abrasive enough to do some damage to the chromes clear coating, effectively dulling it if used too much.
