    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How to get off Cam caps?

Hi all. On my GS650 there are chrome round caps that go on what I think are the Cams. There are 4 total, 2 per side, with the back one just past the intake boots, and one towards the front near the spark plugs.

My bike is missing 2 of these and I found one on a bike being parted out but have no idea how they come off. Seems to be a gap in the bottom maybe for a screw-driver? I think it must have 2 prongs on the inside that go into these holes near the cams...

On most of these bikes, there are two screws on the outside. I'm pretty sure (but not certain) there are two screws that are removed from the underside and accessed through the slot on the bottom. I'd suggest you get a little pocket mirror and a small flashlight...and take a peek!
 
On the 650 Remove them with the cam cover. Other wise their is a hole on the underside for philips screwdriver
 
After removing all the cam cover bolts, the cover should just lift off. The end caps are for show.

You *can* get those off with one of those bent screwdrivers, but it's much easier to just take the whole cam cover off.
 
In your attached picture, if you look where the rear cap should be, you can see the mounting holes where the screws thread in from the bottom.

If you just have to do it without removing the cam cover, I have had modest sucess using a racheting offset screwdriver. I don't remember for sure, but I think a 2" long bit worked.

Yah, those are buggers on the 650Gs with the screws up-under-behind the caps (not thru them like most other models).
What I did when I had a 650G (for 20+ years) is I took a phillips screw driver, and heated with torch, and bent it over at 90 degree. Took some trial and error with a piece of wire first to determine where to bend it, needed to be different than ones could buy. But then could reach in-up-behind the cover, while looking in there with a flat mirror, to tighten the screws. Had to check it often to see if loose.

Then one completley fell off, and then I got annoyed and took of the entire cam cover off and used locktight on the screws (and check valve clearance).

Also had time after time of replacling the swing arm pivot cover on that 650G. Was a great bike (pic on my webpage). Sometimes wonder where it ended up.

Oh, you are asking how to get one off. Oh. The ususall problem is tightneing or installing one.
To take off: either remove entire cam cover and turn over so can get at screws. Or need screw driver bent at 90degreess at just the right length. But, oh, the right length to make the first few turns to loosen (or last to tighten) might be too long to make the last few to remove (or first to start).
Isnt it starting to sound like quite a pain to remove exisiting ones (unless you wanna remove entire cover)?
Have you checked to see if avaialble new for reasonable proce? (Bike Bandit?)?

i've just managed to find the 4 covers that my gs650e's been missing, but they dont come with screws...

can anyone give me an idea of what length, diameter etc etc i'm gonna need? or should it be pretty obvious?

They are pretty small, I believe 5mm by 10mm in length. At work:-\\\, so I can't check. Tonight when I get home, I will confirm. I had replaced mine with stainless cap screws and locktited them in. Kinda fun to retrieve one that has fallen off while driving and luckily land on your boot. Don't ask me how I know!
 
Well I was close, from the factory it was M5 x 16mm cheesehead screws. I used M5 x 16 stainless cap screws with locking washers. Hope this helps.
 
wicked, thanks mate... with that info and the descriptions of how to get them off, i should surely be able to get them back on again :)

they just arrived today, man i dont think i would have been able to figure out how to get them on if it werent for this thread... they look pretty odd on the inside!!!
