    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How to power a GPS?

Is there any switched power that I can use? I was thinking of using the fusebox but then I realized its battery powered (I think).

Should I just plug it into the battery and use a relay?

Id prefer if it didnt drain the battery while the bike is off.
 
There may be a brown wire inside your headlamp bucket that isn't doing anything. It may be switched, you'll have to test it. There will be other wires in there that you could tap (headlight)
you need a wiring diagram, download one from BikeCliff's website.

I would go with a relay ( the orange/green wire from the brake light switch is good to power the relay comes on with ignition well it is on the gs850) and connect to battery for power. Making sure there is a fuse between battery and GPS

The color wiring diag for your bike doesn't work but should be the same as the 850G or very similar

You can see there is a brown that terminates off a T. It's switched. In reality that will be in your headlight bucket & there will be a spare black/white in there too.... For a GPS which probably charges at max 1amp I think you'll easily have enough capacity to charge it using that circuit. To be extra safe you could add a small inline fuse.

If you really want to run a relay you should have a spare "always" on in your fusebox. It's the bottom one & should have screw connectors. You can use that to feed the power to the relay & switch it with the brown. If you are going to add a relay you might also think about doing the relay mod for the coils and / or headlight / horns.
