How to ruin a perfectly good stock frame

  • Thread starter Thread starter mlc216
  • Start date Start date
I started with a stock gs450 and I already have a gs450 chopper as well. The other gs450 motor will go in this frame

I'm interested to see how it turns out.

I don't think more than 2 or 3 people posting here even know the difference between strength and stiffness much less how to calculate it so I would not worry about showing any calculations.

I guess you gotta have a little thick skin around here; goes with the territory :o

Wow. You guys are hostile. The guy shares his build and he gets scoffed at.

I guess this forum is here to share opinions, but I didn't realize folks could be so unfriendly and condescending Doesn't seem like either of you would be much fun to ride with or talk to.

Wow ok, just caught up on this... seems there's been some... feedback? since I last saw it this morning...

All I'll say about the arguing is that I do know that Jeep, Nessism, and TKent actually mean well and just don't want to see it all turn pear shaped and you get injured...

For myself, I say if you're confident in the strength/flex/etc. in what you're building, then keep going and enjoy it :) Like Allie I got no idea on that stuff which is why my frame is staying completely standard... I'm one of the guys who should never ever modify a frame!

This should certainly be a big change from how it was before with that springer front end.

Keep the updates coming, enjoying it so far :D

I just spent an hour googling custom motorcycle frame failures, wow it's a lot more common than I would have thought.
Have fun.

Here is how I did my frame. This is on a 4 cylinder (550) and I used the engine cradle and rear axle plates, fabricated the rest. The roads here is Oklahoma are bad in places and I've not had any problems. Keep the pictures coming.

Here's a finished picture. Some of the folks on here aren't too cool with the cutting up of one of these bikes which is fine but I got a ton of info on getting it to run right from here.

wind yer neck in and leave the bloke alone will you? he is only putting a 450 twin in it and i have seen great big harley motors in flimsier frames than his.

your constant slagging off of other peoples projects or ideas are becoming rather boring now

Seems to me like GSR is pro cafe, anti chopper. Personally, I don't really like either. But the OP seems to have put in some high quality craftmanship, and to that I say - Carry on!

like quite a few others, i am interested in his project. if you dont like it, dont post pathetic schoolboy comments putting the guy down

I didn't put him down or say say anything at all about him, I said his "frame" was flimsy. If you don't like what I post, don't read it. And feel free to remove all the integrity you want from your own frame, too.

all you do is put people down, you never have a positive thing to say about anyones projects. maybe its just a jelousy thing because you cant think them up yourself?
and there is nothing wrong with my frame ;)

No positive things to say about this project, you are right.
Seems to me I have said some positive things about your projects once or twice.

Oi....people...

Actually Age, he does a pretty good job at saying something looks nice even when it is crap. Or at least he did when he first saw my tank even though I know there's a lot of flaws in it.:D

To be fair, the problem isn't a big ass engine with 200 ft-lb of torque, it's the structural integrity of the frame.

Regardless what kind of engineering degree you have mlc216, anyone with a bit of welding know-how, knowledge of motorcycles, some common sense and some basic frame building knowledge can see that this thing can go from brilliant to deathtrap in seconds.

With that long front fork (which offers little suspension) you can pretty much call this frame fully rigid. Lets say you're doing 40 or 60mph down the road and there's a low spot in the road. Since the frame is rigid, there's nothing that can really "eat up" this sudden change in surface except the frame.

In order for the frame to "eat" up this force it has to flex. You might be fine the first time you hit one of these bumps but there's no telling about the 10th or 100th time. When the frame flexes, it can cause a number of situations.

The frame bends out of shape and suddenly your wheels aren't in line. Could be very exciting, in a bad way...

The material next to some welds give away (because the weld is stronger than the base material). Could also be exciting.

The frame outright snaps in half.
You're dead.

Ever think about why hotrod builders nowadays box the frames on their builds? The old frames just can't handle the different suspension, wheels, chassie geometrics, etc.

I see no problem with the lower frame rails and the rear end since it's a pretty basic construction, but I suggest you reinforce the headstock a lot more.

Don't know what you have planned for under the seat but a tube there with some bracing wouldn't be a bad idea either...

Aw man. I think the OP is gone....Dont think he's gonna post here again. I really wanted to see this project.

BTW..This forum has a reputation on other forums about custom builds....I know why. I was told not to put my build on here or It would probably get flamed by certain people....
Advice is one thing, Pointing the finger, jumping up and down and yelling "you're doing it wrong" isn't cool.

Im just sayin is all.

OP - Top job man. Please post more info/pics whatever u have. :)
And if you just whisk over the negative garb, and respond to genuine questions, you'll get alot more done :)
Peace.
