If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

How to seal air filter manifold inside airbox? 1983 GS850GL

Hello forum,

How do you guys seal the filter manifold to the intake in the airbox? Part in question --> https://cdn.partzilla.com/MTE/po/6/Mjc0Nzg0-65558088.jpg

The entire manifold with foam assembly is 13780-49070, but I don't feel like spending ~$60 for a whole new one when I have a perfectly good piece already, just with no way to seal it to the top of the inside of the airbox.

Fun little story: The previous owner I bought it from used Menards adhesive backed weather stripping in the air box. Then suddenly after a long ride one day my throttle got stuck open. After a month testing it out I finally completely disassembled the carbs to troubleshoot the issue. I found a 1"x2" chunk of weather stripping foam in carb #4 right behind the butterfly valve.

Do you guys just rely on the original perimeter of foam, do you put your own foam on it after it deteriorates, or just don't bother to do anything about it?

Thanks

Get some new foam from the hardware store and redo it. Clean with acetone before application. There is a tutorial on Basscliff's website. I'd post a link but can't from where I'm at right now.

Yep, use the sticky back closed cell foam (the firmer stuff) from the hardware store to seal the top of the air filter where it contacts the airbox, and to seal the lids on either side of the airbox.

I then give the foam on top of the filter a coating of grease so it'll slide in without ripping the foam off.

This is a rite of passage for shaftie owners. Welcome to the Most High Order of the Shafted Ones!
