after wrestling this for a day thinking it was my charging system after just replacing the R/R... then buying a $100 AGM battery... we determined it was the starter (we beinf Steve and I... but mostly Steve).
So pull out starter (easiest way is to take carbs out- but if you don't want to- with the proper tools- you can get a deep socket in there.. like I did much to Steves shigrin
)
- take out the two bolts that hold the starter in, then knock the starter back until the gear clears- angle it so the gear is facing diagonally towards the front tire [aka the left], tip the starter up and pull it out diagonally to the left- theres no way to get it out the right side.
***I assume no responsibility in damage or injury etc. etc., if you decide to test the starter, I am simply saying that this is how you *could* test a starter, not saying that you *should* test a starter.***
::with that being said::
if you hook up jumper cables to a car battery, negative on the mounting part of the starter and touch the positive wire to where the live wire bolts on to the starter, it will spin the motor- with a great amount of torque!!

it smelled like wet, soggy, old, cigarette butts :-s

! Even though it's low voltage, there are plenty of amps behind those 12 volts to give you a good "bite"! Me personally, I clamp the two mounting lugs on the starter into my vise, connect the positive lead to the starter and then touch the negative lead to the vise. Works for me, unless of course you are using your calibrated G.I. Joe Kung-Fu Grip to evaluate the torque of the starter when you complete the circuit which you obviously can't do when it's clamped into a vise!
