    A note to new registrants...
All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

after wrestling this for a day thinking it was my charging system after just replacing the R/R... then buying a $100 AGM battery... we determined it was the starter (we beinf Steve and I... but mostly Steve).

So pull out starter (easiest way is to take carbs out- but if you don't want to- with the proper tools- you can get a deep socket in there.. like I did much to Steves shigrin :p )
- take out the two bolts that hold the starter in, then knock the starter back until the gear clears- angle it so the gear is facing diagonally towards the front tire [aka the left], tip the starter up and pull it out diagonally to the left- theres no way to get it out the right side.

***I assume no responsibility in damage or injury etc. etc., if you decide to test the starter, I am simply saying that this is how you *could* test a starter, not saying that you *should* test a starter.***
::with that being said::
if you hook up jumper cables to a car battery, negative on the mounting part of the starter and touch the positive wire to where the live wire bolts on to the starter, it will spin the motor- with a great amount of torque!!
Here's a video first showing my bad starter, then showing my starter I swapped out from my 79 GS850

here's the inside of my starter...
it smelled like wet, soggy, old, cigarette butts :-s

yuck.

Thanks for the help Steve.

Personally, I'm a bit leary of electricity ! Even though it's low voltage, there are plenty of amps behind those 12 volts to give you a good "bite"! Me personally, I clamp the two mounting lugs on the starter into my vise, connect the positive lead to the starter and then touch the negative lead to the vise. Works for me, unless of course you are using your calibrated G.I. Joe Kung-Fu Grip to evaluate the torque of the starter when you complete the circuit which you obviously can't do when it's clamped into a vise!

12V cant shock you. It is safe to touch each pole of your battery with one hand. Not enough potential for current to flow through your body. Now a screwdriver or wrench has low resistance and sparks will fly.
