I just Bought a Nitrous Kit

It's an old version of the 3008-OZ kit from NOS.

Here's an actual picture of it - (guy I bought it from was a professional photographer)

SPNK321.jpg

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with it yet but it was too good of a deal to pass up. I have some questions for anyone who knows (in case i decide to put it on my 1100)

It has 0.018/0.022 jets in it now which looks like a 24HP shot.

Here's something I posted on a different forum:

I found a cheap wet nitrous kit. It comes with 4 NOS foggers, NOS fuel pump NO.15760, NOS powershot fuel and Nitrous solenoid a 10. OZ bottle and all the lines going to everything (Nylon). and a micro-switch and arming-switch. The kit is dated so these are early generation components (are these known for problems?)

I have a few questions as I am new to nitrous and everything that it entails, but first off i'll let everyone know my goals and bike specs.

The bike is an 83 GS 1100. It has VM33 smoothbore carbs, individual air filters, and a 4-1 megaphone exhaust. I put 1150 cams in it and degreed them for torque (centers at 104/106). The bike is fitted with a dyna 2000 ignition which has the ability to retard ignition timing when a circuit is completed. My thoughts were to run the micro-switch in series with my horn button so that when I am WOT and I hit the horn button the nitrous activates. I am occasionally going to visit the strip with this bike but it will mainly be a street bike.

The questions I have are:

If i do, lets say, a 20HP shot at each cylinder VIA nozzles is that effectively a 80HP shot? I'm not going to be doing any modifications to the engine so I want a relatively safe and small shot (~20hp?)

Also, for anyone who has put nitrous on these bikes, where do you tap in? Do you drill and tap a hole in the cylinder head?

I've read about the engines going lean when nitrous is first triggered. What is the best way to counteract this other than delaying the nitrous solenoid?

Thanks everyone for your input - I'm going to continue researching this.

Nick

P.S. If anyone knows of threads with similar (carbed and/or GS Bike) setups could you please post them to this thread so that I may read them.

Thanks again,
Nick

I have no experience with nitrous, but am curious, ... is all that effort really worth just 20 hp? :-k

If it's 20/cylinder, great, but a total of 20 does not sound like very much reward for all the effort. :o

.

Well, the jets could be swapped to make more power...i think those solinoids are good for about 125-150 hp max.
A bigger concern would be whether or not the bikes electrionics can keep with with that fuel pump.

It has to be a 20 shot. You will have to probably fill the bottle every time you use it... You need extra fuel too..

it is simple to install and you would be surprised how much 20bhp can make, plus as stated you can upgrade to what ever hp punch you want, as long as the engine is sound

With the 10oz bottle, using the "rule of thumb" at 25 HP I could go about 19 seconds. Nitrous is about $3-3.5 a pound. a 2lb bottle would give me a full minute.

What do you guys think or know about blowing it through the carb? I think I might tap into some old velocity stacks that I have so that it is easily reversible and I don't have to drill into the head or intake boots. I have VM33 smoothbore carbs with a push pull throttle so if the carbs do freeze I think I should be able to manually close them still. What does someone with experience think?

This is a wet system with a fuel pump and jets and nozzles, just cut your fuel line and hook the fuel pump in line with a T.

The fuel pump will only run when the system is armed for a few minutes while you want to use it... and the battery will have more than enough ballast/buffer.

Looks like a Headache to install...

The hard part would be routing everything nice and clean.

Yes, that is a wet shot.
You can check the current draw on the pump, I can't imagine why your charging system could not keep up with it for the short duration of its run. You will only be using it at high RPMs, so you are running off your charging system, not your battery. And I suggest that if you run that for a full minute, 60 seconds, you will be breaking the sound barrier, not adviseable on a GS. ;) You are probably looking at 5-10 seconds at a time, since you are adding 25% hp to your bike (assuming you run it at WOT, which is what car NOS systems do). You should have different nozzles for different hp., if not, they should be available.
You really don't want to be sending extra fuel through your carbs, not to mention the extra pressure of the nitrous gas. Pony up and make a decent carb boot connector, and bear in mind that it will be pressurized, so you will want to make sure the nozzles are solidly mounted.
I notice it has a switch of some sort. You want to make sure that is not a toggle switch. You want a momentary switch, which arms the NOS while you hold it, and turns it off when you let go. Far, far safer.
Looks like fun, and best of luck.

The toggle is to arm the system. There is a micro switch there that I'm going to run through the horn button to activate the nitrous once it has been armed. The kit came with different size jets. That does make sense about running off the charging system while it's charging at 14.5 volts.

Extra pistons AREN'T needed if you do it correctly. There are too many things to go over for me to sit here & type for an hour when I can go over it on the phone a lot easier! Ray.

I tried it, for street ridding, it sucks?

I tried it, for street ridding, it sucks because:
1_Yes a big hassle to install$$.
2_ The bottle has to refilled again and again$$$.
3_It melts a hole through standard pistons$$$$$.
But there's always another chump to buy it off you???, after you've learned the hard way$$$.

1. No it's not. One afternoon worth of time.
2. So what? We know that going into the job!
3. ONLY if you don't know what you are doing or get greedy!
Squeeze is the next best thing to the 3-4000 a hair dryer kit will cost & you can be sneaky & hide the Nitrous where you CAN'T hide the hair dryer!!! Fun stuff for a VERY affordable price!! Ray.

nitrous will work on any engine perfectly safely if it is installed correctly, without doing any damage

It's not the HP but the Torque your going to love, she'll pull like a train.

Make sure your pointed straight before hitting the button and maybe a few spare tire's too.

Why use the excuse of 'its a lot of hassle to fit' ??? It's a lot of hassle to put ur helmet on to go for a ride its a lot of hassle to stop and put fuel in it, but if you don't do it you don't go for a ride. It's also a lot of hassle for me to type a reply to quench the nay sayers!

If you don't do something you'll spend the whole of the rest of your life not doing it.
If you do it, it may take a few hours but then it's out of the way and you did it!

A 20hp shot will make a fantastic difference to your bike, especially as someone mentioned - the torque. On the dyno my bike went from 80 odd ftlb to 120ftlb from just a 36hp shot. It also gained 36hp or therabouts.
You would have to make a fundamental mistake installing it to melt pistons with only a 20hp shot. It will only be really useful on the drag strip but it will take a few tenths of your quarter times.

Enjoy

I ran nitrous on my 1150 for fifteen years. I only used it occasionally and at the drag strip. I probably refilled my 2 lb bottle 20 times or so over the fifteen year period. My motor held up fine for a very long time. I did put heavy studs in the block and i had the crank balanced and welded. I also put in a heavy duty clutch basket. I had a 1229 weisco kit in mine and my pistons suffered absolutely no damage over the years. My cylinder walls did begin to oval around year 15 and i developed some piston slap noise so I sent the motor out and put a new set of cylinders on it with new rings , but used the same pistons. My motor also had high performance cams, head porting etc but never self destructed under nitrous. Mine was a 40 hp kit. Like i said I used it sparingly for the most part
