    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Does anyone have an online wiring diagram for a 550 or similar bike? Or does anyone know of where I might be able to purchase one? What would be the best repair manual to purchase when I get around to it?

I can't help you with a wiring diagram, but they must be similar to the diagrams for the larger GS machines. I had a link to one on the WWW, but alas it's no longer there. Maybe some helpful GS-Resources bod will be able to post one here for you?

In terms of manuals, some folks will say you should get a Suzuki 'workshop' manual, but plenty of us DIYers use the Haynes ones which are pretty good.

Depends a bit on what you want. The best technical manual is the factory Suzuki manual. It has info and specs and detail drawings (exploded views) that are not included in the Haynes and Chilton manuals. However, it also assumes the person working on the bike is a well trained tech and has experience in mechanics. This means that simple steps are often omitted and not discussed. If you are a decent mechanic and can live with the small steps being skipped, the Suzuki book is the one.

Haynes and Chilton do not offer the technical info or details that the factory manual does, but they include lots of helpful tips and often have tricks to get around using a special tool that costs a fortune.

For reference, I ALWAYS buy the factory manual and consider it a cheap investment (my 1100 manual was about $95CDN from the dealer) in keeping my bikes running properly. I HATE to let anyone else touch my bikes and will do everything up to and including a complete top and bottom end rebuild if necessary in my garage, to know it was done right. The only things I farm out are machine work because I cannot do those...

I think Ill go buy myself a Haynes manual and see what it has to say about all my loose wires. I am fairly skilled mechanically so I dont mind certain steps being overlooked. As long as it has a wiring diagram I should be ok. Thanks guys

Navigate to 'My Kat' and then scroll down to 'Downloads'.

Of course it's bound to be different to the diagram you need for the 550, but then GS/GSX motorcycles are all broadly similar so it may well get you the info. you need in the meantime.

When I bought my 1983 GS1100 I went to the local Suzuki dealer and they made a copy of the wiring diagram for me. Maybe you could do the same. I went in and asked if I could take a look at it and they offered to make a copy of it for me. I later found out that they do not work on the older bikes so I guess they did not mind giving me the copy. You might just ask for a copy. I then later bought a Clymer manual off of Amazon.com. It has the wiring diagram in the back I think I paid about $30.00. It has been helpful so far. The pictures in the book are not my bike but they are very close to it. Sometimes I have to really read the process couple of times to see how to do something. Good luck.
 
I bought a Haynes for my '79 GS1000 and was more confused than without it. I couldn't find a Chilton, which I bought for my '72 750 Honda, and had very little trouble. To me Chilton just is easier to follow.

Don't count on it! It would be nice if that were true, but there are important differences between models. The larger bikes have very different harnesses. Suzuki made major changes to the 550 wiring harness in 1981. Get a manual specific to your bike - it will have the right info. Both Haynes & Chilton have wiring diagrams in the back of their manuals
