I need help on where to connect the wires. I just got a new stator and the wires are getting so hot they melted the plastic.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am a little wiring diagram deficient.

Thank you!!!

hooold it right there. ya don't want to fry that new stator. did you clean and/or replace all connections? did you run a ground wire from the reg/rec to the battery negative? did you read the stator papers and bass cliff's site? http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/

By the way this for a 1980 GS750E.

I did all of the above but am just confused on where to hook up the wires. I had replaced my stator before and I did fry it. Now I need to get it right this time. I have a new/used stator, new battery and a rectifier off of a GS500E

Thank you for your replay,

I did leave out some important details.

1980 GS750E (It is the 2 Stroke with a few extra parts)

Wire the stator straight into the R/R, bypassing the factory harness. Solder the connections or get some new spade terminals. R/R ground needs to go to a solid frame mounting point, not the battery box, or straight to the battery. For the + output from the R/R, go into the old fuse box connection or straight to the battery with a fuse in line. If you go through the fusebox be sure to check for voltage loss in that wiring route using the test method detailed in the Stator Papers.

Good luck

Thank you for the reply.

How many stator wires connect to the rectifier?

What do I do with the other two wires.

I decided to tear it all down again and re-clean all connections. Also created a brass tubing heat sink to go under the rectifier as seen on one of the suggested postings. If I should replace my rectifier with a different one does anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks,

posplayr,

I looked the R/R PDF and that is some good information. However I cannot put that much money in to one right now. Is there any lower cost solutions that would be safe?

Thank you,

Or could I test the GS500E regulator to see if it produces the correct readings?

It's about $80 to get a proper R/R. If you can't afford it right now, feel free to put anything else that you want, but when (not "if") your charging system goes bad, you will have to change the stator AND the R/R, which will cost you at least double that, not to mention the inconvenience of trying to get the bike home from wherever it died.

Use the R/R from the 500 and wire it up as I stated. The R/R should have 5 wires: 3 stator input, power out, and ground.

That is great news.

I will make sure to wire it up correctly.

Got the RR soldered in and now I need to find out where the white/red and white/green wires from the main harness connect?

Thanks,

I believe they're now redundant, being the old feed up to and back from the headlamp shell / light switch, which turned on the third stator leg to supply the whole system with extra power when the lights are on. You don't need them any more.
However - depending what spec your bike is and where you are - if you're required to have the headlamp on at all times, all is good. If you're using an old reg/rec and you run it without the lamps on, you might / will kill your stator sooner or later as it's getting a lot of power shunted back into it and will overheat.
This is why the newer series reg/recs are recommended - they neatly sidestep that issue entirely and give the stator a much easier (and longer) life.

Hey Grimly,

Thanks for the feed back. I am in the US but I do turn the headlight off. I am using a RR from a GS500E I think it was like 1999 model.

I may just has to start leaving my headlight on.

Thanks,
