Hello all. Not my first post, but first on the new account. (Couldn't recall old one.)

Here's my deal. 82 650L.

I am having starting issues first off. After awhile though it will start up.

Then once it starts it only runs with choke on, and any throttle given to it it dies. Plumes of white smoke coming out of exhaust. I'm assuming this is an idle/carb/throttle adjustment issue?

If anyone can help me out and point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. I'm just about ready to run a train over this thing...

Have you done a valve adjustment? When?

Carbs properly torn down and dipped? New orings?

Intake boots checked for leaks and o-rings replaced?

Does the battery have a good charge?

Define 'after awhile'.

My 650 has always been tough to start, esp in the cold. Always requires choke to start and has to warm up a bit before I can ease the choke off and keep her running.

General rule is DON'T give it any throttle when trying to start, and I wouldn't be surprised if mine didn't stall out if I gassed it before it was warmed up a bit (don't recall this as an issue though).

Sometimes I find if it has been a long time between starts, putting it on prime for a few minutes first replaces any gas that may have evaporated from the carbs.

If it only runs with choke, even when warm then I'd suspect what Cowboy suggested, you may be running WAY lean (not enough fuel) due to the things he described....carb boots, carbs need cleaning, air filter oiled and air box sealed....etc...

Valve adjustment was done since last riding season. Carbs were torn down properly with all new o-rings. Checked the intake boots and airbox for leaks as well. Also checked spark plugs for carbon build up and gap, replenished tank with fresh fuel and replaced fuel filter and air filter. All good.

I'm not sure why you ask about the battery, it's certainly not an issue. Not only do I leave it on a float charger but while working on it I hook it up to a regular battery charger so I don't lose power if I have to crank if for any amount of time.

My issue is more idle and throttle based.

After allowing it to warm up it still will not run without choke and the throttle kills it. I do not use throttle to start it...

Also, with choke on it revs high and doesn't want to run except on full choke. I wouldn't think I am having a lean issue seeing as there is so much white smoke from the exhaust.

Pulled the carbs again, checked the valves again, and about to readjust throttle and choke cable. Anybody have any other suggestions?

I see in your post that you tore your carbs down and cleaned them, but did you soak them in a chemical dip like berrymans, what you are describing sounds classic like your low speed idle circuit is plugged up, check your pilot jets,

'Properly' clean the carbs....
(I think I'm gonna put these 4 little words in my sig)

Hi Mr. Nuitdevotremort,

Yes, there is the "proper" way of doing things and there are shortcuts which lead to frustration. You'll find links to very helpful "how to" guides below. It's always the same with these bikes; properly cleaned carbs, sealed air intake systems, valves adjusted in spec. Just those three maintenance items, properly done, will alleviate about 75% of the problems with these long dormant or abused classic bikes.

Anyway, let me dump a TON if information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Cleaned the carbs in a parts cleaner at work. It was thoroughly cleaned.

Is the parts cleaner an ultrasonic one or more of the standard tub with brush? If it was the standard tub, you won't get enough of the stuff through the passages to thoroughly get out any crusted up junk in there.

If it requires the choke to run than something is not set correctly in the pilot circuit. What are the jet sizes? Did you run a wire through the holes in the jets to ensure they were thoroughly cleaned?

Well I haven't confirmed it yet but I'm fairly sure it was an issue with the idle adjust screw this whole time!

Once I finish the electrical system and reassembly I'll have to give it a go.
