Idle hangs

My newly rebuilt carbs won't idle worth a damn. The idle hangs so I know i am lean. 80gs1100 w/4-1 header. I am running stock pilots, 117.5 mains, pods, needle set to 2 rung from the top, floats set to 22.5mm. I tried turning out my mixture screws, they are now out 3 turns as per the Factory Pro website. I can't turn them out any more so I want to know what to do next. Should I richen my mixture by changing my float settings?

Paul

If your float settings are factory spec don't alter them (you might overflow your bowls plus nothing really to be gained).

Have you checked for air leaks and done a synch?

Otherwise you might need to pop in bigger pilot jets if you can't tune in with the mixture screw (which is not usual).

First, why cant you turn out your adjustment screws any more? You should be able to screw them all the way out. As in not in the carbs anymore...If ya cant, you maybe need to clean them again? Anyway, I think your needle is too lean...needs to prolly be third from the top.. wait you said you have pods and youre running a 117 main?? Thats WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too lean dude....try more like a 130 mikuni, or better yet buy a DynoJet kit...

Well, I can turn my mixture screws out some more, they are just above the level of the carb body. So I need a larger main eh, because 107.5 is stock. 130 seems large.

Paul

107 is stock on an 1100?? E? or G? a 117 is only 4 sizes up from stock even so...my bike has a 112 stock and im at a 130Mikuni (really a DJ138 but that maths out to just about 130..) If you have CV carbs, as someone who has done this already, and pulled my hair out trying it, never to get it right, just spend the money and get the DJ kit... It will save you HOURS and HOURS of time, it will be just about perfect the FIRST time, and you wont risk hurting the motor playing with jets that are too small...

Ok...well lets do the math then...

My 83 1100ESD is a 112.5 US spec (i think its a 115 Canadian spec) I went to what is equivellant of a mikuni 130 main......
thats SEVEN steps up... still running stock pilot, tho I would suggest going to one size larger, i have my screws all the way out and it still pops a touch..Adjustable Canadian needle in the 2nd or third clip from the BOTTOM...try that..

Based on that math, you are likely to need a 125 Mikuni main jet...

I'll order a couple of mains 125 & 127.5. I have one size larger pilots that I will install when the mains come in. Also adjust the needle to 2nd or 3rd from the bottom.

Thanks, Paul

This is what I was thinking.....shouldn't it be in the middle for stock, and I would lower it one step with that header

Duro

With the airbox? I'd start with 122.5s.
With pods 130.
What kind of 4-1?

Ok, I'll order 130 and 132.5 mains. The header is a sidewinder I inherited many years ago, brand unknown.

Paul

What circuit controls idle? I can't get my 80 1100 to idle.
Carbs are meticulously cleaned, 130 mains, needle set to middle, floats 22.5, mix screws set for best idle, throttle cable fine. There are no air leaks. The idle still hangs. I have had these carbs off 10 times and don't know what to try next.
Any opinions?????????

Have you tried a synch?

Had the bike run on these carbs before you cleaned them? Have you changed anything besides the carbs? IF it had run Ok on these carbs before you cleaned them then why would you have to start changing jets, etc?

The bike ran and idled great before cleaning. I changed the jetting for the 4-1 and pods I run.

Throw some 47.5 pilot jets in there.
Did you take the idle mixture screws out and change the o-ring.

I'll change the pilots tomorrow and yes the idle mix oring was replaced.

new pilots installed, no change.
idle still hangs then slows, then stalls
16 valve motor
compression good
carbs spotless inside
all new o rings
pilot-47.5
needle-middle
air-150
mixture screws-2 1/2 turns out
pods and a pipe

advise on what to do next?

If the pilot air screw it 150 you should be running a 160 or 170. With the 47.5 pilot jet I'd go with the 170.
