    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ignition and main fuse keep blowing 78 GS 1000 C

Hi Forum members,
All of a sudden main and ignition fuses blowing.Cant find any obvious wire erosion, shorts or burnt out wires.Any theories appreciated.Electrics aren't my thing and local auto electricians don't like working on old bikes.No appreciation for the finer things in life.

Long shot, but my 850 went through a bout of that. Turned out to be one of the terminals on the horn touching the frame.
 
It's gotta be a clue that the lower-amperage ignition fuse blows along with the higher-amperage main fuse . I'd have a good long look at the wiring diagram for the bike and see where it's possible along the ignition circuits to do that....

Have you done anything recently in the wiring or routing of wires? Too Often the last place fiddled with is the first place to look

Found it !! I had put some new headlight brackets and lower bars on.In the process of putting it all back together some minor re routing had created a short under the key ignition.A wire was contacting the wire hydraulic casing from the clutch and shorting on the front end.It was lucky I was working outside and the light was fading.Noticed a tiny spark which probably saved a lot of forensics.

Great! Thanks for reporting back! For sure looking for sparks should be added to the trouble shooting list! It's really hard to spot these if there's too much light ....
 
That's awesome that you found it, and it wasn't anything too major. It's also super awesome that you reported back with the answer, always nice to see a diagnostic thread that has a clear conclusion. Sent you an email with foam pictures as well.
