    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Does anyone have any advice on how to trouble shoot the ignitor or have had issues with the ignitor. and if I have to replace it where is a good place to buy one.

Oh brother you have asked a mouthful. Do some searches on the 550 igniter, there are tons of threads including my own "Igniter interchange project". While the past history for replacing these failed components has been bleak things are looking up.

I'll give you a quick overview. The 550 ignitor seems to be plagued more than anyother in the GS lineup and as a consequence, used replacements are very scarce and hard to come by. It seems that the 550 series were more prone to overcharging problems that burned out the igniters. They are still available from Suzuki but cost around $690 or so. There are a couple of aftermarket types available at around the $270 mark and may require some engineering to the pickup plate ( Boyer Bransden from England).The cheapest aftermarket alternative would be the Dyna "S" but it does require the installation of a mechanical advancer from an earlier (points model) bike.

I have been successful in retro fitting the igniter and corresponding pickup coils from the 700/750 series and the details are in my thread already mentioned.If you are interested I can send you a copy of my tutorial in pdf format, just PM me. Another member (victorgallas) was successful in repairing his with new transistors and may be setting up to do these repairs. I am about to send my old one to him to see if he can replicate the fix.

The igniter can be checked and the procedures are outlined in a tutorial on BassCliffe's website http://members.dslextreme.com/users/storagecliff/images/electrical_odd-n-ends.html#A11 and there is an additional test shown in the Suzuki manual.

As previously mentioned, a lot of these igniters were burned out by charging systems that produced over voltage so if and when you get a new igniter , you need to insure your charging system is running right or you'll likely burn out the new one too. Something to remember.
