If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I pulled the rear wheel off my 80 850l and found it has a 16 inch wheel on it. It has 16Xmt2.75 stamped on it. Everything I've read on here doing searches says I should put a 130/90/17 tire on the rear. Do I have the wrong wheel on it. I also have an 81 850l parts bike that has the 17 inch wheel stamped 17Xmt2.50 on it. Should I get the tire for the 17 inch wheel and put the larger wheel on?

You can't put a 17" tire on a 16" wheel.

The L model bikes typically have 16" wheels so your '80 GL should havd that size. The '81 GT as shown in your signiture should be a 17". One good thing is the the wheels should interchange I think so have at it.

The 81 is also an l. I need to change my sig. what I was asking If I could use the 17" wheel with a 17" tire. on the '80 to lower my rpm's at cruising speeds and not have any clearance issues.

Good question. Sorry, no experience.

Hi,

I seem to recall that Mr. Grandpa alternates between a 16" and 17" rear wheel, with no adverse affects.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Very small reduction in RPM with the 17". Go ahead and do it if you have a 17" "G" wheel

Does your 17" wheel have a 130 or a 120 tire on it? I believe the 120 was standard. :-k

Assuming all the measurements on the tire are exactly as claimed, here are the circumferences of the different sizes:
130/90-16 = 79.21"
120/90-17 = 80.12"
130/90-17 = 82.35"

As you can see, there is less than an inch difference between the first two, which is about 1%, and only 3.14" difference between the two 130 sizes, or about 4%.

.

You are correct, Mr. BassCliff.

My GS1100GK stock rear wheel was a 16-incher. It alternated service with a 17-inch wheel I had from a 1980 GS850G like yours.

Both wheels took a 130 size. No problem ever with fitment or clearance.

No such flexibility on my Yamaha Venture; all rear wheels are 16-inchers.

Thanks for the responses. Was there a noticeable drop in rpm going from the 16" to 17" grandpa. Thank you.

Noticeable? Yes.

Significant? No.

Whenever I changed from one to the other, I would notice the slight difference in gearing. After a while, I'd get used to the new status, and go on with life.
