A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Installing New Compufire Reg/Rectifier to 81 GS1100 - advise on additional grounds

Forum Newbie
Hi Guys,

I am in teh process of installing new Compufire Reg/Rec to GS1100 and I would also like to install new improved grounds/earths - I remember seeing a post on how best to install new ground wires to optimise improved charging system (Posplayr?) but despite my best efforts I cannot find this post / link anymore on the site.

Please can anyone advise me where I may find this information?

Thanks in anticipation of your assistance - and thank you for a great site with a wealth of knowledge!!

Cheers

Posplayr is an advocate of what he calls a "single point ground (earth)". Using that practice, your R/R, starter solenoid, lights, virtually everything that has a black/white wire, will attach to a single point. That point is then connected to the negative terminal of the battery. Ideally, the negative terminal on the battery should only have two wires attached. One is the connection to the single-point ground, the other will be the large wire that connects to the back of the crankcase to ground the starter.

As a side note, I like to maintain just one wire on the positive terminal of the battery. That one wire will go to the starter solenoid. Any accessories that need constant power will attach at the solenoid end of that wire, rather than the battery. In the event of removing the battery, it really helps to have very few wires to keep track of.

I like to maintain just one wire to the battery negative terminal too because it's easier to remove the battery in their cramped locations....
A billion automobiles and motorcycles without it would seem to cast doubt as to why it's "better" to add a second wire to the battery post.
but there's no harm in the SPG, and it can be convenenient to attach things to.
