A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

81 suzuki gs650. I just cleaned the carbs on my bike. Had a question about putting the air cleaner back onto the carbs. There are these metal ovals(not the clamps)with a slit in them that go in the air cleaner boot im assuming, but im not sure where to position them? Do they rest in the side of the boot where the carb will go? or the other side where the carb would not be touching? I cant remember, its been awhile since i took it apart.
Thanks for any help on this. As is, without them in i cannot get the airbox to remain attached to the carbs.

They go inside the boot to put tension on the boot against the air box.

The rings are best centered, inside the boot, with the air box side wall.

Half sticking inside the airbox, half sticking outside the air box, inside the boot. If that makes sense.

ok that makes sense. Thank ya guys.

Is this the reason why the airbox now is pulling away from the carbs do you think? As i was trying to get everything together i had all the carbs up against the boots on the airbox and then i check it a few minutes later and its worked itself loose on its own initiative... Maybe i need some new boots/clamps?

Mount the carbs to the head side boots first and then lube up the rubbers ( I like Windex or equal) on the airbox and slide it into place and clamp it. I know...very little wiggle room in there but, been there and done it a few times. ;)

Thats actually how i managed to initially get them on, and they just keep wantin to slide off. And you're not kiddin, those things are a pain in the butt to get into place! i think i invented some new words while "finessing" them into place. hah.... one thing i could be doing wrong. Is the boot supposed to actually go over this tab show in picture?

No, the boot slides on up to that tab.

ok, well ill keep tryin to get it mounted. hopefully ill get it figured out tomorrow. thanks guys

well turns out the wedged in spool of electrical tape I removed as I was taking the airbox off served a function... I think the airbox may be slightly warped or bent (if that's even possible). but I was able to get it all snugged up, and most importantly got to hear the bike run!
although something is up with the throttle, when it started it reved up on its own. I tried adjusting the idle screw which helped some, but its still acting weird. like if I rev the rpms don't drop right away. ideas?

Hanging idle USUALLY means unmetered air (lean). Did you do the intake O-rings, also?

ok, I had backed the screws out 1 1/2 so ill back them out a bit more. and yeah I did new boots/o rings

Air filter in and lightly oiled?

Turn them IN please.

Out is leaner (think more AIR, not fuel.) Those screws meter air, into the system.

Not so, Dave, he has an '81, therefore CV carbs. :o

The screws are MIXTURE adjustment screws. Turn them IN until they seat lightly, then turn them out THREE full turns.
This will likely be a bit rich, but will definitely allow the bike to start. Once the bike is running and warmed up, turn each screw in slowly, listening for highest engine speed, which indicates best mixture.

.

Alright then...turn them in and then turn them out.

Turn them upside down, if you like. Carbs, ya gotta luv em! :p

Thanks, Steve. Misinformation is worse than NO info at all. :D
