Intake question

hah ok ill go give that a try. I readjusted the throttle cable which seemed to help. I had just put a in line fuel filter in after cleaning the carbs, read up on that and i dont really need it, so thats gone. Started up immediately today with no choke, prime or anything. The throttle response is much better, but rpms are still hanging. Ill go try to readjust the pilot screw now. Also ordered a new air filter.

Ok so i turned them all out the 3 full turns and hanging idle solved! Thing started right up sounded great. Took it for a ride and it is sputtering when i try to give it much gas. So ill tweak the mixture some more like you suggested and go from there.

well I haven't had a ton of time to tweak mixture on my bike. I set it to 2 1/2 turns out today and noticed the idle seemed to raise so I took it for a spin. still seems to sputter at certain points in the throttle. I didn't check the float levels on the carbs when I cleaned them, would that be a good place to start if adjusting the mixture screws doesn't correct the problem? if so, will this be adequate in getting the job done? www.summitracing.com/parts/PTM-PP2699

come to think of it, the other day I accidentally left the petcock on pri for maybe 15 minutes. came back out realized it after I saw some gas dripping from one of the carbs, would this indicate incorrect float level or possibly bad petcock?

Maybe, but most likely the fuel just leaked past the float needle valves... common issue. That's why you shouldn't leave the petcock on PRI (gravity feed).

The worst that can happen is the fuel will overflow into the crankcase & then you have to change the oil & filter before running the engine, or bad things will happen. However, I doubt that occured in 15 min. Unscrew the oil filler cap & give it a good sniff - if it smells strongly of gas (or it looks overfull) then change the oil out.

Time to synch the carbs - then fine tune the mixture screws.

Ok thanks for the advice. Ill check the oil too. Time to give my wife a surprise shopping day and THEN drop the 100 on the carbtune.

Im wondering where i can find a new OEM filter to match these?

Also, i think i know why it has been sputtering. I pulled each plug wire: #1,3,4 almost dies. #2. shocks me and no change in idle. Can i just get a new boot for it?
EDIT: ordered 4 new boots.

What a unique innovation! I would say "Bubba" did a great job at fabricating those, and notice just how clean he kept them. Kinda resembles the holely molely one that came with mine, but mine was dirty.

Haha that's what I was thinking. I enjoy how that one slice has the reflective backing, ive heard that is proven to give HP gains of about 25% and increase cooling and airflow. I will sell said futuristic filtration device to highest bidder

Yeah, the boots just spin off the end of the wires once you push up that rubber cap on the end. Snip about 1/4"-3/8" off the wire before twisting on the new (NGK?) caps; (don't forget to put the new rubber caps on the wire first).

Also, I just bought an aftermarket Uni filter for my 650... looks to flow better than the OEM, but haven't riden the bike yet - she idles & gets to redline perfectly fine sitting on the centerstand though.

ok cool, thanks for the tips man. that boot on cylinder two just basically fell off with little resistance when I was inspecting it. I'm hoping replacing these will cure my problem and I can hold off on the carbtune for a little while longer.

I actually just put a uni filter on mine this morning too. it sounded good esp considering it was running on 3 cylinders Hah. I used k&n filter oil on it, hope that is the right kind to use? it recommends their brand naturally, but I had the k&n already

Got the new plug boots and new plugs installed. This thing is finally running like it should! Took a little cell vid, pretty crappy sound but, ya im happy today.
