anyone know is it possible to switch the crank in the GS1000 to a 1100 crank to get the 66mm stroke ?
from checking on alpha sports it seems the primary gear is the same, the main bearing size is the same, end bearing is the same

so can it be done

gs1000 is a 70mm stroke isn't it? what are you trying to achieve?

gs1000's have a 70mm bore and a 64.8mm stroke. if you could fit the crank you would need the 1100 block and head as well, if it fits. if you want bigger capacity then a wiseco 1085cc kit would be a lot easier, and probably cheaper option

stroke it is a fun thing to say but don't do it to your 1000.

Good Question. But I think possible and sucessful are 2 different things. A cylinder spacer will be necessary and thus making the engine taller. The cases are thin as it is for the power that can be built with a 64.8mm stroke engine.

How much time and money do you have for an experimental engine?

drag racing a 1000 base engine I learned a lot about the limitations of them. 140 is the power area where they really begin to eat themselves alive - 1085 with nitrous or 1105 built / balanced . chucks,! a hot dog 1238 and you are on the edge of making what a 16 valver can do with a couple very simple mods.

Short stroke is better in 90% of all situations

Hines had these things at the max 79~80 and they had case girdles strapped outside of what ever was in the bottom end. I do not know if they ran a 66mm crank.

I will tell you that a straight cut gear on a 64.6 crank/clutch basket is money best spent if you are serious about making a 8 valve 1000 make over 150HP . A stock gear crank just welded is fine to 140HP. Build a big valve-big port head and clearance it for .500 cams because the magic of massive power starts with the head flow. carbs are next then you have to deal with clutch imperfections.

I changed engine designs and went 16 valve in 2008 (1150 base) because for half the price you get the same power if not more.

thx for the input tripp
yes i have straight cut gears
cams are 425 lift
clutch problems are cureable
i do recall the girdle on vances bike but im sure he had alot more hp than im chasing
this might be one of the 10% of occassions long stroke is better

so anyone have the answer ? will the crank fit

Wow so you're already in this seriously deep.

I'll make a call to an old friend who thinks he's too old to play on a computer. He was making these dinosaurs fly long ago.

To answer your question, yes it can be done. Is it practical...No, it is not. It requires extensive crankshaft work and engine case grinding for clearance of the crank throws. It leaves one of the main bearings at cylinder #2 with marginal support for the crank. The rods are also longer on the 1100 crank, requiring a taller than stock block or a custom spacer. The extra 20cc gained are not worth it. I ran 2 of them in my Super Comp bike (8.30 in the quarter) and both of them broke at cylinder #2........Why not put together an 1175cc motor in a stock (sleeved) block with custom pistons ??.....Billy

thx billy thats more like the info i was looking for
what were you doing to the crank when you say extensive work ?
i have the 78mm pistons 1238

All I did was the case mods required for the crank to turn in them. The cranks were built and modified by Falicon Performance at the tune of $800 a pop. I also have an APE "big block" that was made taller than stock to accomodate the longer rods and stroke of the 1100 crankshaft. What is your ultimate goal ???.....What is the advertised compression of the pistons you have ???.....1238 kit will fit in the stock block with oversize sleeves, but leaves the sleeves and block pretty thin....Billy

comp is advertised at 12to1
they are dynoman custom pistons
barrels will be spaced up to suit

I believe when Rick Gero ran his 1000 prostock, they used an 1100 katana crank.

sorted finally, turned out to be alot easier than i thought
roger upperton in the uk mods the crank to move number 2 bearing across to line up with cases, gs1100 2 valve barrels and bobs ya uncle done
should have it running end of january hopefully

what about the timing chain gear?
top dead center will end up top dead center, via, rod length, or custom pistons, but what size chain, style, and difference is there between the timing chains (gear size/teeth), and the final timing plate/and igintion rotors?

Hi Ozman

Consider a quick call to Phil Tainton here in Melbourne. Suzuki's old and new are his speciality and he knows a thing or three about older Suz engine mods.
