    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Is my slide trashed? - Jet Kit Install

While installing my K&N Jet kit, I was drilling the first slide out, like instructed.... BUT the hole wound up being crooked anyway..... even though I did it on a drill press.... :evil:

I was drilling from the bottom of the slide toward the top, so now the hole looks like a figure 8 when looking in from the diaphram end.

Is it junk now or should it be ok?

Are these easier to drill out with a hand drill?
 
The holes on my carbs were at an angle. Slide a smaller drill through one of the holes you havent drilled out yet to see the angle. I used a hand drill.

I would try the carb before I bought a new one, but would keep watching ebay for an old set of carbs just in case.

Was it pretty easy to "Feel" the hole when you were drilling?
 
I have done two sets of carbs on my bike. I tried the drill press on the first set and botched a slide, even though I tried to be careful.

I found that if you chuck the drill bit in a Tap Holder and turn it by hand, it follows the hole quite nicely. The aluminum slide is soft and you can hold it easily.

I can do a set of slides in about 10 minutes with this technique.

Did you try the carb out with the slide you messed up or did you find another one?
 
Don't use a press, they are great for new holes, but don't let the drill bit follow a pre-drilled hole. Use a hand drill for that job and run it at low rpm.

As for the slide being ruined, not sure.
 
I used a cordless Dewalt and held the slide in my hand. Try and anticipate the angle of the existing hole and don't use much pressure and the bit should follow the angle quite nicely. Worked like a charm for me.

As far as if your slide is trashed, is the hole on either side the right size? I would imagine that it wouldn't make a difference what the back side looks like or even how big it is, as long as the bottom of the slide has the right size hole. The amount of air allowed to pass through will be dictated by the smallest opening in the passage.

Worst case is having someone fill the hole back up with aluminum solder or something and redrilling the hole elsewhere.
 
Yes, the hole on the bottom side of the slide is the correct size. It seems to start going crooked about 1/4 of the way through.

I priced a new slide assembly through BikeBandit.com - $87 (very disheartening)... lol
 
As long as the hole is the correct size at the bottom of the slide don't worry about what happen above it or inside the slide. They are bleed hole's only.

You can always epoxy the hole and drill it out again :D A few bucks for some expoxy and a few beer's for me and you still got 80 bucks left in your pocket.

Slap that puppy back together and go for a ride then tell me about it.

If you have BS34 carbs like on my '821100E I'll mail you a spare slide for the cost of shipping. The carb body is screwed but the slide and diaphragm are good. Let me know.

That would be great. How do I tell which ones I have? They are the round slide, not flat. That much I know....
 
Measure the inside of the the part of the carb that slips into the carb boot (closest to the engine, not by the air cleaner). If it measures 34mm across then it's the same.

Here's an update - I finished the rest of the carbs today. All went well, thanks to the suggestions and ideas from everyone who replied.

I drilled the remaining three slides, that I didn't screw up, in 4 steps. I used 4 different sized bits from smallest to the one supplied in the K&N kit. It worked great and all wound up being the proper sizes and shapes.... :)

RJ, as soon as I get that slide from you, the beast will live. :twisted:
