Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a 78 GS1000 that i sent the carbs out and had professionally rebuilt, with bigger jets. replaced the stock ignition coils with new ones and new points. know matter what i do it runs rich and burn up plugs after about 30 minutes. sometimes it backfires as well. Please Please help. love this bike and have put a little money into it .

if you dont miond me asking...was it Wired George by chance that did them??? Is the exhaust stock or what?? Stock airbox or pods???

Why were the carburetors rejetted with larger jets? The only reason that would have been needed is if you have an aftermarket exhaust and/or pod filters. Do you have either of those?

Also, what other maintenance has been completed? Valve clearance checked? Not sure about that model, but some have o-rings between the carb boots and the cylinder head that are a common failure point that causes vacuum leaks.

Thats exactly why i asked those questions...need to be precise on info to make an accessment..

That's kind of what bigger jets do.

yes wire George did them and they have pods . i change the exhaust but went back to stock

Precisely what have you done?

Good question. 33 year old motorcycles need maintenance, lots of it. And every time the intake system or exhaust is modded then the carb jetting needs to be adjusted accordingly. It's a whole lot easier to just keep the bike stock, with stock jetting. That way there is no guessing or trial and error jetting needed.

Haven't you guys also said this Wired George (what a name) does some pretty crappy work?

Geronimo, you're in the best position to do your carbs all over. Go through the VM carb rebuild procedures here and do them yourself taking note of the jet sizes you have. Start over and follow the advice given by the guys who really know and you'll be running again shortly.

There's your problem.

Wired George has a pretty well known reputation on these forums, and it isn't good.

You are going to have to pull the carbs off and see what he did..... or didn't do.

I realize that pulling a rack of carbs off of a bike seems like a daunting task but it really isn't that hard. There is a tutorial on BassCliffs web site that you should have gotten in your welcome to the forum that will walk you through the process.

Be forwarned, if you really want pods expect to do some tunning. While the older VM carbs are easier to tune for pods, you will still have to fiddle with them. This isn't something you can just send the carbs out and have them work right, they need to be tuned to YOUR bike.

Now before you go tearing things apart have you done the following:

Valve adjustment
Checked ignition timming
Synchronize the carbs
Adjusted idle mixtrue

Thank you

Thank you

Thank you. Wish i had none about this guy sooner. I could not find anyone around here to work on older bikes, let alone the carbs. There is a shop about an hour from my house that I think can get me running again. I'm going to the Dyna ignition and coil. They say thats my best bet at this point.

You say that no matter what you do it runs rich. Precisely what have you done?
I have had the carbs done.( Wire George) Put in bigger jets because i thought i was going to change the exhaust but didnt. . Going with A Dyna Ignition and coils since I have the single pods. any help would be appreciated . I also have had the rectifier and new electronics installed.

One a scale of 1 to 10, I put doing carbs at about a 5. Doing valves, for me, is about a 7.

I'm not a mechanic but have done almost all the work on my bike myself. Of course, it can be really frustrating sometimes.

If you do a carb cleaning search, you'll find a ton of info on cleaning them specific to your bike. You don't need any exotic tools.
