Jetted the carbs... Exhaust question

So I added a stage 1 jet kit to the GS750T. It's still running an OEM style filter. The question is, do I upgrade the exhaust or keep the stock system?

I really like the quality and symmetrical look of the stock system but if performance is going to be hurt then I am finally going to pony up to a new Vance and Hines 4 into 1.

I looked at the MAC system but after having a set on a previous bike, I can't say that I am impressed with the sound or the quality of the MAC system.

So can I get away with the stock system?

Get away with the stock system? Of course! It will typically have more low and midrange power than a 4:1 but give up a small amount at high rpm (and weigh more).

My bike jumps up in the air when I crack the throttle. I run with pods and a 4-1 pipe. I don't know where the idea comes from you lose low and mid. The DJ kit keeps it all right if jetted properly.

That's perfect. I don't want to lose any low end or midrange. If I feel like shrieking down the road I will ride the Turbo (that I am too afraid to abuse lol). It's time to get this bike done. She has been sitting apart too long.

Might have something to do with the BIG BORE KIT in that BEAST of yours!

For an otherwise stock engine, the stock exhaust is optimized until the rev's get up into the upper register.

Mods? Yeah that would be almost nothing. Stock motor with a stage 1 jet kit and stock air filter. That's why I was thinking stock exhaust.

There are many schools of thought on this obviously. As said, you gain a bit of power in the high end with the pipe, but IMO if you're doing the pipe, do the pods too for max effect. This would involve a stage 3 kit i am sure, but as said on here by those who ARENT pod nay-sayers, its the best bang for the buck mod you can do to a bike with a stock motor in it. The 4into1 is also roughly HALF the weight of the stock system, partly because its almost HALF the exhaust, plus they are single wall pipes, rather than the double wall stock system. I think the VandH sound GREAT, not real impressed with the MACs that ive heard. Sound kinda tinny to me.

However, for the classic lovers, stock is the way to go.

I am purchasing (On SATURDAY\\:D/) an 82 GS1100G from Griffin, and i have come up with a solution. I want to keep the bike "bolt up" stock. In otherwords, no mods that cant be swapped back to stock with minimal to zero effort. SO my solution, is to purchase an second set of carbs, (which i will be sending off to Chef to jet and set up for me :) ) and said V&H 4into1 and a set of K&N pod filters. I will keep the stock carbs, airbox and pipes, so that should she ever become of GREAT value (other than the personal attachment level she shall avchieve with me i am sure) Everything can be put back the way it came from the factory tootsweet. Just an idea, but one to consider, that way, if you dont like the way things are when you are done with your mods, you can put it right back, and sell off the stuff you bought. There are enough modders on here, you should be able to get the majority of your money back pretty easy. Just my .02

I'm a wierdo... I like stock bikes. Well unless it's a hopeless mess when I get it and I have to buy parts that are missing to begin with. I am still looking for a really clean set of original pipes for the bike. Much cheaper than aftermarket and they will bolt right up as well. So I guess the search for stock continues. Thank you guys.

We have ALL kinds in here (and I'm pretty new so haven't even seen them all) from people building very "classic" cafe bikes, to streetfighters (I consider mine a street fighter with a touch of class) to guys who want perfect stock (looking ike it just rolled out of the showroom) and we get on amazingly wel.

I’m a huge stock exhaust proponent myself. The systems are heavy but they are more durable than any aftermarket system this side of stainless or Ti, and the carb jetting is ballpark close, save a little pilot screw tweaking and jet needle lifting.

When I bought my 550E it had a Yoshimura header which blocked the center stand and had more rust than I cared for. Traded it for some stock pipes which turned out to be rusty themselves. Settled for some L model pipes off ebay, which were new when I got them, but I would really like to find a nice set of standard/E model pipes. I’ve even contemplated purchasing an entire bike, but can’t find one in my area with a decent set of pipes. The search continues…

Ed, Bike Bandit doesnt offer the pipes for the 550s anymore? I dunno i am just askin since alot of people were saying the 1000 exhausts are still available thru them and stuff. Yeah it would be expensive, but it would be shiney :)

Wish me luck on this... I have been trying to find a set of near minty mufflers for my bike for over a month now to no avail. I found a set on Ebay but was outbid today...

So today (tonight, or this morning actually) I ordered a Vance and Hines 4 into 1 system for my bike. But there is a twist. The used mufflers I was bidding on Ebay sold for $117.50 plus $69.34 shipping. That is steep to say the least, even if the mufflers were very nice.

I know I said I like stock, blah blah blah... But I am sick of looking for a set of mufflers for this bike. Plus the bike is already jetted after all right? :-s

So after some arduous searching on Google I found this:

Vance & Hines

So aftermarket it is. I will let you all know how this turns out. Wish me luck (never done business with them before). 8-[

Good luck with your transaction. I put the V & H on my 1000 and love it. It has the "old school sound" without being overly loud and I can still use the centerstand and also have access to the drain plug and filter. For mine I had to modify the rear mount slightly but other than that it was a direct bolt on. Since you have the jet kit installed already in you should be right on or very close on the jetting. The V & H instructions for mine noted to take the airbox lid off.

That is what my instructions said but that was if you were not using the Dyna stage 1 kit. The V & H generic instructions that came with mine listed a bunch of different bikes and most of the jetting instructions had you changing the mains, shimming the needles and taking the filter box lid off as I recall. Since you have the Stage 1 kit already installed I would go with what it says for the Dyna as a base point and dial it in from there. A K & N filter might also help. I have one in on mine with the stock airbox.
