A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

so here's the deal. i have a 82 gs1100gl, had it about a month now and it's been my daily rider. it's been making a clanging sound and i wasn't sure if it was valves or cam chain. well the other day i started it and it ran for about 10 seconds at about 1k rpm and died. i tried to restart it and it wouldn't start, it only made a really loud pinging sound, like metal on metal. i put in in gear to see if it was the starter or not and when i hit the start button the bike would move so that should rule out the starter. then i put my hand over the exhaust and it is sucking air as it tries to start. my understanding is that this means it's a timing problem, correct me if i am wrong. with that being said, i'm assuming this means bent valves among other things and possibly broke tenssioner. me and a buddy of mine have motor experience so we we're going to try and look at it ourselves. i also have a clymer manual for my bike. i'm looking for answers like what do you think has happened, what has probably broken and where do you recomend buying parts?

any help is greatly and extremely appreciated, i want my baby back!!!
thanks, roux

Pull off your valve cover and check your cam timing

Pull the rocker cover, pull the plugs, check the clearances and movement while spinning the engine with a socket and bar and checking for the valves/buckets to move, tight valves.

Count the cam-chain from the timing marks and measure against specification.

Worse case the lumps toast as the chain/ inner tensioner had failed or a valve has dropped (I've never seen a GS do that but others might.)

#3 exhaust:

Fortunately, it happened at hand-cranking speed, while checking valve clearances.
See that ONE little dent just above the seat? That is where the tip of the broken valve hit one time.
