    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Just rebuilt the carbs
Only way the bike will stay running is with the choke on all the way??/?/

How did you rebuild them? Were they dipped in Berryman's for at least 24 hours each? Did you use new orings?
 
Those siamese carbs are VERY sensitive to the amount of intake air they require to run correctly.

Tons-o-fun getting them back on the bike with the airbox!

Best to use a brand new OEM air filer in the stock airbox.

The bike will not run without the "sealed" airbox on.

Also, how many turns did you set the mixture screws to?

Try 3-1/2 turns out - seems I remember those carbs like that better to start with.

Almost all the issues I ever had with those carbs were related to air intake. They simply will not run right unless using a well sealed airbox with OEM airfilter. Something about the air restriction that is set up that way.

New intake boot o-rings too?
 
No, They were tight and not leaking I checked not long ago
 
Unless they've been changed out in the past, those 30 yr old o-rings are hard as a rock & not sealing... best to replace them.

Assuming you did a proper carb dis-assemble, dip & reassemble and a valve adjustment.

The fact you need choke to keep it running means there's extra air coming from somewhere.

Any mods like Pods & a pipe? Electrical in good shape? Stock coils & wires?

I can say that of all the GS models I have tinkered on, my '85 GS550L was by far the hardest to get running right. Bumping up the mains one size & raising the needles a bit (.010" - .020" IIRC) helped.

The bike only has 14,500 original miles
It is all stock
We put new pilot jets in it old one got messed up when we took them out, got what should be factory stock replacement, mains are the ones that came in the carbs

Ha, thanks Ed - quite a compliment coming from you !

Yeah, my son's '85 550L was my first venture into the GS world... I learned a crap load about that bike, thanks to guys like you & the rest of the experts on here.

That particular bike was set-up & jetted super lean from the factory, and its sensitivity to air leaks makes it a bear to get running well.
