A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

K&N air filter question

Have a look at the K&N site or give their 1-800 number a call. They would mention if any carb changes are required. For a stock set up I would doubt it.

One thing to note, however, is that K&N filters are less restrictive than stock so there could be a bit of leaness develop but not likely unless you also have a less restrictive muffler fitted which you don't. Again I doubt that it would be enough to cause performance issues or even to worry about.

Give it a whirl.

Cheers,
Spyug.

You probably will have to make adjustments to the idle mixture screws. See if you can get a hold of a Colortune.
Maybe even step up on the mains. Not much though. I would do plug chops and read spark plugs.
Remember they do flow more air and these bikes are tuned lean from the factory.

I put a drop in replacement on my 650. I did not re-jet, or really make any adjustments, except one.

I noticed that after running at steady throttle for a period of time (think rally cruising) It would seem like it was starving. At first I was thinking some rust chips in the float bowls, that would jam up a passage, then with more bumps/changes in throttle it would go away.

Anyway, all this time I had to keep the vent tubes on because the choke didn't work (PO), and I had to blow into them in order to manually choke the bike to get it started. Well, wouldnt you know it, one time the vent tube came off and I rode with it off, and no stumbling anymore.

Long story short, got re-build kits and re-built my 550 carbs with 650 jetting, and put it on so that the choke would work. Did not install the vent tubes and sure enough, runs like a champ.

All that to say, with the K&N on my 650 the vent tubes being attached were too restrictive, and causing starvation at steady cruising speeds, without the tubes attached, and just venting through the T to atmosphere it runs great.

That has been my experience. YMMV.

I popped one right in on my '85 700ES 20 years ago without making any changes at all.....................still running like a champ, about to hit 100K miles with it.
