You should try out knee dents on a spare tank or have a spare tank at hand while you bang on the original, just for insurance in the event you go all Thor on the denting. If you crack the tank, you'll still have one to use for riding.
If the stock tank for your bike is rare, etc., all the more reason to try denting on a second one. Check the mounting points and channel size for your tank, and use that to scout out a spare tank, perhaps from a different year or model. If you have any welding skills, you can go broader in your search, since you can relocate and weld the bolt mounting bracket to fit your frame, so long as the channel size works. Although the parts nos. don't match, the GS1000 fiche for 78, 79, 80, and 81 appear to use the same shape and size of tank for the E models, maybe the G as well.
The L model tanks will be different, to allow riding side saddle.:lol:
