A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hi all. I have a 1981 (month 1) GS550. I've tried the search feature and looked at all the gallery photos. I've narrowed it down to being either a "T" or an "L". Can someone help identify this model. What are the differences.
I have the VIN JS1GN71L3B2103366 if that helps.
The best photo of the "T" model (0280-1.jpg) shows the passenger footpeg holders that I have but the fenders aren't chrome like mine and there's no bar behind the seat like I have.
All help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave.

do you have a rear drum brake or a solid or vented disk? what kind of front forks do you have? is the front axel under the forks or attached to the front of the forks.

what color is it, the t came in black and gold and a maroon/red thing.

click on my signature at the bottom to see some pic of a 550 t

edit hey that my pic :) 280-1

the PO must have taken the grab bar off before i got it, it is supost to have it.

does your seat look like mine or is it a king/queen seat?

"L" or "T" help!

Thanks Ryan.
It has rear disk brake with solid disk.
Front forks have the axle in front of the forks.
The color is black with a double white pinstripe on the tank. I don't see any other colors. the side covers are missing so I can't tell color on them.
The seat is I think a King Queen (two levels) and has a key lock on the back.

The picture of the "L" model (0026-2.jpg) doesn't seem to have the passenger footpeg holders like yours and mine. The seat in the "L" picture is closer to mine but the one on mine has a more distinct rise to the rear passenger area.

Dave.

"L" or "T" help!

Thanks again Ryan.
Can you tell me what was the identifying factor? You know. What made you think it must be the "L" model?

Anybody else want to give an opinion?

Thanks much, Dave.

As far as I know, only the "L" models were made with the front axle in front of the forks. All others had the axle on the bottom of the forks.

BEING THAT THE 8TH DIGIT IN YOUR VIN IS L . I would say its a L model.I didn't notice any t in the vin.

That doesent mean anything. My vin has an "L" in it and no "T", but my bike is a "T".

If you get your bike insured, you could give them your VIN number and they should be able to tell you.
