A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello all, I have a 1980 GS850, I recently rebuilt the carburetor's because the carburetor on my number 2 cylinder was leaking into the air box. I got the rebuild kits and on the advice of my brother of whom works with small engine's I only rebuilt the bottom halfs. To me it seems like some sort of float issue but as i'm not really a carb guy i seek wisdom from the knowledgable!

Thanks for any thoughts on the subject.

Petcock could be leaking down the vacuum line and into the engine - it connects to #2. If the petcock is ok, you need to go deeper into the carbs. There is a rebuild series on the GSR homepage. Spraying out the floatbowls is not generally not good enough.

Good luck.

my first suspect would be the fuel tap leak, so test that first

if thats all right, then the fault is most likely at the float valve (either the oring or the valve needle/seat)

Thanks guys, i just went and checked and it's pouring out. With what you guys said, some stuff from other threads, and the fact that i already replaced the needle and o ring i'm going to try the petcock! I will try and keep you guys posted

mosst people find it best to just replace the tap, as re-build kits are not that good

Hi Mr. devauxr,

You've got quite a nice bike there, but I may be a little partial. :)

Please click here to receive your mega-welcome, chock full of suggestions and links to vendors and other information. Then feel free to visit my little BikeCliff website for lots of GS850G lovin'. There I've been collecting the wisdom of this generous community, both to share and to make it easier for me to find when I need it.

Thanks for joining us. Keep us informed.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Be aware, you have 2 problems. The petcock & the needle & seat must both be leaking. If either one is working properly, it shouldn't be leaking.

I have a petcock coming from a friend who luckily has an extra, but i also have a rebuild kit coming as cheap insurance because i'm not sure of the condition of his either. I took mine apart and there was a visible tear in the diaphragm...frankly it kinda fell apart in my hand. The needle and seat are the next on my agenda.
