    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Left Handle part - What is this?

I have a 1980 GS1100E.

On the bottom of the left handlebar, just inside of the grip, there is some sort of contact plate.

On this diagram, I'm talking about parts 6 thru 12.

I seem to be missing at least the lower half of this part as the contact plate (the part between 8 and 9) just sorta hangs there in the open.

Bike bandit lists the main thing that is missing as "THRMINAL BACE C".

Anyone have an idea of what this is and should I be worried?

Could be the starter disconnect switch, which came on some markets.

If the clutch is not engaged, it is not possible to run the starter.

On both my -81 and -84 GS, the parts 6 -12 aren't mounted stock, but the slot and the two holes are there.

We don't need a switch like that here (thats wy they didn't came stock), but maybe your local regulations say you have to have the switch.
 
It is OK to bypass this switch as long as you remember to start the bike in Neutral. You'll get a nice surpise if the bike is in 1st gear when it lights off.

Sounds like someone already circumvented the starter safety switch. Mine fell apart and rather than get a new one I just cut the wires and tied them together. Probably not the best solution but, you only forget to make sure its in neutral once :oops: .
 
Yea, those little doodads are a pain... I had a clutch safety switch until it went out, and I thought my starter relay was bad... After a little while with the meter, I figured out what the problem was and bypassed it in my headlight.

Been there, done that, learned my lesson.
