Okay pulling the old bars off and I find that the left hand grip is all but glued on. Anyone got a secret way of getting it off without splitting it in half. I was hesitant to slide a screwdriver down it because I was planning on reusing them for now. May have to go ahead and upgrade and just split it so I can get my clutch handle off. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Everything I read is that side doesn't do much so splitting it won't hurt anything UNLESS you aren't wanting new grips. Have you tried maybe heating it a little with a hair dryer to loosen the glue?

About 5 drops of lighter fluid will have them sliding off easy.
Put it on the bars at the top of the grip a drop or two at a time and twist easily.

Got an air compressor? Shooting some air in there can break the seal.

You have an air compressor with a "blow" attachment?

Stick it up to the hole in the end of the grip and BLOW. The grip will slide right off. :D

.

slide a thin screwdriver under it until you can get a WD40 straw in there & then spray & twist gently until it comes free.

Degreased thoroughly before re-fit.

I never find re-using them works great.... you'd better use some good rubber cement or grip glue to hold them in place.

My wife would agree that I am more like Steve... A tight wad cheap ass...lol. If I can reuse it I will many a time.... But I may try the lighter fluid or WD-40 trick. Unfortunatley I don't own an air compressor, that is my next big purchase, garage wise that is. So if I get a new set of grips does anyone have a good recommendation. I am going down the no Chrome road here. Thanks for all the quick replies.

If you want no chrome i like spider grips. The motocross ones. They are super comfy and dont lose grip when wet

I got these

at the local shop.Way better than the 30 year old hard as a rock grips.

If all else fails try pouring boiling hot water on them,in them and keep it coming till loose.

I've noticed that it works better to push them from the inside end as you twist than to pull; the whole "Chinese handcuffs" phenomenon happens when you pull.

Removing Grips

Removing Grips

A hunnert years ago a motocross wrench told me they used WD40 for getting them off AND for puttng them on.... and that's all I've ever done since (never ever purchased any grip glue). Use the straw to shoot a little under the grip...twist...repeat. This works on the throttle tube too. With some of the newer grip materials I've found them a little more stubborn, sometimes requiring a small screwdriver or such to help break it loose.

I tend to experiment with different handle bars and can't see buying new grips every time I want to swap. I've got one set of OEM grips that I bet have been on and off a dozen times

When you do finally replace the grips the best thing to use for installation is hairspray, hairspray allows the grip to slide right on and also holds extremely well. Spray some hairspray into the grip let it coat the whole inside, slide it into place and let it dry for at least twelve hours. If you need to remove the grip at a later date all you need to do is get a good firm grip using both hands and twist. I've been doing it like this for thirty plus years and have never had a problem with one coming off or coming loose unintentionally.
You never want to glue the grips on, that just creates trouble later on down the road as you have apparently found out.

I agree, hairspray is the perfect adhesive for your grips, been using it over a 40 year period when I owned various bikes and haven't found anything else that works better.
