ok this is one of the things i have been meaning to get. at harbor freight the cheapest one is 500$, at discount ramps its like 700+ if you count the 200$ shipping!

i saw a few different plans online but i dont have a welder. another thing thats on my to get list.

ok too the point i found one that is wooden using black pipe

im going to post a few pictures and links i wanna know what you guys and gals think

That looks like a great project if you have a little woodworking skill.
On the other hand some of us can't get a rusted nut off.

I saw that wooden one posted here earlier and can't help but wonder if the 2 x 4 that is holding it up would split on the grain and let the whole thing come crashing down!
So next comes what could be done a little better...
I have seen a guy use the base from a Dentist chair with a wooden platform mounted to it, so probably one from a Barber chair is not out of the question. You'd get a Hydraulic lift and it swivels.

Problem is it would be tough to get the bike on, seems it needs to "tilt".

I found this at work and the Plant Manager wanted it gone in a clean-up , so now it is in my shop. 19" wide and 10' long.


I'm just been trying to figure out the cantilever lifting system. The pipe style in your pic may be the answer. I was thinking a bottle jack mounted inside to lift it instead of the floor jack. Curious to see how you do yours.

well there was a guy using a different set of plans made this. obviously he had a welder, but its along the same design doing what your talking about.

well on next wed im going to get the plans for the wooden one and order new tires for my 850 (little dry rotted) ill post pictures as things progress.

I'll come along for the ride on this one. I can't justify the cost of a bench (over here we're talking $900+) but my housemate's pretty handy with timber and he told me the other day he has a welder too.

the wooden one not counting a jack should cost around 130$ at home depew. I plan on doing some modifications for strength like joist hangers and reinforcing the threaded end of the pipe with some sort of insert. Reason behind that is sch. 40 black pipe is pretty strong but the threading is cut 2/3 of the way threw causing a weak point. they say they tested it with a weight of 1000lbs with no problem but the limit is 600lbs????? I figure with mods mentioned above it should lift my GS's no problem.

the plans cost 30$ i think with the rising cost of metal it would probably set you back about 300$ but thats still 1/3rd the cost of what it costs in your area

Definitely putting it in my food for thought bin, my only possible catch being that I would need to have one low enough to park a car over when it's not in use.

ahh but the wooden one they claim its light enough to stand on its side and move to the side of the garage or tuck under a bench. looks like 2x6's were used so that puts it at about 7" high if you count the plywood top & base

Interesting! That could be a better option, although looking at the metal one makes me think it could easily be modified to sit very low to the ground, probably 3 or 4 inches or so.

If that's the case, it would be a piece of cake to park a car on top of it.
