Loose Clutch Spring Nuts

I'd been noticing a bit of intermittent slippage that was really confusing me. It wouldn't happen all the time, nor would it be in a consistent situation. Warm or cold, different gears, etc, etc.

I knew my clutch was adjusted properly and I'd already replaced half my springs with EBC last year, but it was still happening. So when I did an oil change today I decided to pull everything apart.

I found that three of the springs were quite loose. I'd torqued everything to spec when I put it all back together last year, so I'm wondering if the old OEM springs didn't have enough tension on them thanks to the EBCs, allowing them to loosen up?

Regardless, I checked my fibers and they're all within spec and there didn't seem to be any glazing. Scuffed the fibers with 1000 grit wet and the metal plates with 600, and checked them all to make sure they weren't warped.

Sadly, I have an appointment now so I can't go for a ride, but I'm hoping this will make a substantial difference.

With the springs on there I've never had a problem with them backing out.
I check the threads on that inner hub.

Everything looked A-OK as far as I could see, and they all torqued up nicely. I'll change my oil at least two more times before winter, so I'll check again then.

I don't understand the situation. What do you mean by loose springs?

The springs are captured between the inner hub and the pressure plate. Are you saying the free height of the springs is so short they are not under compression when the pressure plate is installed?

Did you have to press in the spring in order to install the bolt?
My Barnetts are a bear to get threadded.
Do you have the washer and spacer on each bolt?

The bolts which hold in the six outer springs. (I apologize for putting "Nuts" in the title.)

Yes, all the bolts needed to be pressed in before they'd grab threads, and they all had a washer and a spacer.

Well that's a weird one for sure!
If it does it again use some blue loctite on them. (medium)

That's what I was thinking, but I'm wondering if this is revealing a potential issue with the common "fixit" of replacing half of the OEM springs with APE or EBC.

Could it be that somewhere in the engagement/disengagement, the EBC springs are still providing enough tension, but the OEMs aren't getting enough, allowing them to slowly work their way loose?

I've never taken apart a clutch before, besides to replace springs/fibers, but it seems to me that the amount of tension they're under right now would be the minimum they'd experience, no?

Do the springs spec out at 38mm? I'd replace them. I can send you some.

Honestly, I don't remember. They were in spec when I checked them last year, but I didn't write it down foolishly.

They weren't noticeably shorter than the EBCs when I just took them out and stood them side-by-side.
