    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So I've searched everywhere for the key to my bike, but it seems to be nowhere. What are my options if I in fact do not find the key, to of course start the bike, fill the tank and take the seat off. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Take your helmet holder lock off and look on the back. There is a key # back there and that is what the locksmith will need to make you a new one.It's about 15 bucks.Dont forget to take it with you so you can make sure the new key works!
 
Locksmith can make a key without the number. They scuff the surface of the key, insert, turn, remove, look for evidence of contact with the tumblers, file the area with contact, repeat until you have a new key.
 
Are you referring to the seat lock? Mine is locked and I don't see a way of taking it off.

It does look like the ignition is pretty easy to get at. From the way it looks, I've got 2 allen screws underneath and then the wire harness that goes into the headlight housing. I assume there is a plug at the end. If I take that in to a locksmith, should I be able to get a key made?

Any easy way of removing a locked gas cap of the same key?

I still cannot believe I cannot find this key!!!

lmfao - keys - wooot 'kn keys....

I bought my bike the dude had a holden commodore carkey in it....

it worx great - he said i might want to secure it cause he has lost 3 in 4 mths....

so I have a snazy lil braided cord which I clip to one of the cables running either side of the center housing.... just as well to cause when ever i hit the old girl hard and and slam through the gears..... sure enough it pops out.... still runs of course... just wait till Im running a lil calmer and place it back in lmao.....

ignition key - try any long slender cage key... mebe mine is a lil buggered but it worx.....

Petrol cap key that same key inserts far enough (5mils or so into the petrol cap key and thats enough to unlock it ffs....

Seat lock dont have one i just use any flat tip screw driver or even the afor mentioned cage key to lever the sliding bolt mechanism back far enough for the seat to pop open.....



KEYS are soo over rated .....:-D

I think blank keys are still available for most GS bikes...at least they are for mine. I was lucky...I got both from the original owner!!:-D
 
The helmet lock comes off with 2 allen screws.look closely. Take the whole thing off and then you will have it made.

I was on ebay and they had keys, maybe 50 or so for suzuki cause I need a new one but you need to know the # of your old key which I didnt have, I will take my helmet lock off to see the #. Thanks for the info.

So I saw no way of taking off the seat lock while the seat was locked in it. My next option was just to remove the ignitiion, which takes removing the headlight bucket and unscrewing 2 allen screws to the ignition. The wireharness unclips from inside the bucket and it is done.

The locksmith I went to was an old codger who has a shop in an old beat up truck. I stopped by earlier and he said he could make me a key for $20 if I brought in the ignition. It turns out that the numbers on the ignition didn't help him much as the 2 attempts he tried failed. He ended up using a blank, and from what I could tell, used the impressions the tumblers left, and started to hand file. As I sat quietly in his little truck, I saw key blanks from Lambrettas, Fiats, odd shaped Volvo keys and keys from an Opel, which had the biggest circle in the middle I had ever seen.

What I loved about being there was that this guy is from the old school. He knew the ins and outs of his trade. He did things the traditional way and utilized his tools that were probably as old as I was.

Anyway, to get on with it, he hand filed my key which works perfectly. He used up a couple of blanks and I tipped him properly. I'll be heading back there to get another spare for the bike and one for my old Volvo trunk lock, which no longer uses a common blank. He had them though!

Ahhh, how sweet:-) I was raised on the east coast(US) so sarcasm is in order. My key code is on the helmet lock. I found it by removing it.
