    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

loud buzzing

Hi all,

I have an 81 GS 850 G. Just recently I have been hearing a loud buzzing when the engine gets up to 3500 rpm, and goes away at about 4000 rpm, and there's no noise below 3000 rpm at all. Could this be valves? The bike has 19,500 on it.

You could just have something loose and vibrating making a buzzing sound. My gas tank starts to vibrate at around 5,000 rpm and makes a buzzing sound. Its kinda weird.
 
Shouldnt happen. I betcha you dont have your rubbers installed. There should be three, one on each side at the front and one at the rear hold down.

I think Earl is refering to fuel tank rubbers.:-D Is there less of a buzz with a full tank of gas?

I hope so, I would never recommend using three rubbers at once otherwise.....:shock:

It would really help if you can locate a general area of where the buzzing is coming from. I had a situation similar to that that turned out to be a loose side cover.
 
If you can get the buzzing to happen when you have it in neutral, then you should have some luck tracking the sound to a small area. Get it on the center stand and check it out.

Might also be something loose inside the exhaust. But that's normally described as a gawdawful metallic rattle, not a buzz.

It could also be as simple as a bracket resonating at a certain RPM. For example, the horn bracket might be bent or just a little out of position, letting it buzz against the frame at certain resonant frequencies. Something weird like that.
 
Could be your stator... My bike just started doing that a few weeks ago, took off the stator cover and had one screw loose just a few turns that was causing it.
