    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have ben offered up a 1981 gs 650 for 300 dollars bike is good shape. Owner has lost the keys and sent me a video of it running. I do not think it is rods sounds more like the valves. but not sure. My question is is there any way to post the vid. to get some feed back or someone i could send it to Hate to see to go to waste. I do know that there is a noise from the gs's caused by the cluch springs and also the gear on the back of stater. but not sure what this is any help please
 
Sounds scary to me, but I have poor hearing. Remember this is a plain bearing crankshaft- low oil or no oil means big trouble.
 
IIRC, the shafty had roller bearing crank and the chain drive had plain bearings.
Sounds like valvetrain to me, not the knocking sound of a rod bearing.
 
Steve recently had a 650 with a broken wrist pin retaining clip. I only heard it once, and only briefly. I do remember it was persistent like that, and scary-sounding. Hopefully he'll find this thread and give his opinion.

$300 for a 650GL, with custom paint and that noise? Also, those pipes look long for stock. I think I'd steer clear. That's an expensive parts bike.

You can get it cheaper than $300 with a sound like that :eek:
 
That is a wrist pin. At best, you can bore that cylinder and install one oversize piston. At worst, the cylinder block and all pistons must be replaced. Parts bike, negotiate the price as such.

you cannot just bore and oversize 1 piston ! that would unbalance the motor
its either the lot or none

One reason it's making noise is that it's not running on all four cylinders.

The rattling sound could be a loose timing chain (common, because so many owners/mechanics simply don't know how to set the tensioner properly).

The rattling sound could also be a loose baffle in the muffler, but it's hard to say.

Dogma, the sound is not quite like we had with the wrist pin. That wrist pin was a LOT worse than this video.

Hard to do over the internet. Check some easy things first. I would check the stator first Make sure the bolts are tight & not hitting and that the rotor bolt is tight also check the big nut on the clutch hub
 
Loosen the jam nut on the cam chain and see if the screw is jammed against the rod first off. If it is then set it out about 1/4 turn from touching off on the rod and then lock down the jam nut. Start the bike and twist the big knob on the right side a bit to see that the rod is moving..it will click if it is.

I also concur with checking the stator and the starter clutch bolts. Pull the rotor and see what happening back there.

Pull the cam cover and have peek around inside there too..and pull on the cam chain to see if its tight and not loosely wiggling up and down.
 
It sounds just like the one I had that I sold the top end to Steve from and it had a spun # 3 rod bearing. Those 650 shaft bikes are plain .
 
well I belive i will pass on it i will say that the seat look perfect. nice tank just needs a paint job I am in Owensboro ky. which is 120 miles west of Lousiville ky and 120 miles due north of Nashville tn. if anyone is interest in it. the zip is 42303

Probably the wise move. There be another with the "just needs the carbs cleaned" which will be a lot less work than exploring internal engine noises. Mine is amazing quiet at 42k- there's plenty out there, so keep looking.

Yeah, the fact that it is running on , at best, 3 cylinders along with that noise tells me that there is something seriously wrong with that motor. Pass.:eek:
