Magnetic speedo pickup location.

Hi.

I have a 1981 GS1100E.

I'm looking for a way to mount a magnetic speedo inside the engin sprocket cover similar to the 1998 GSX 600. There are 4 magnets on the end of the sprocket nut. I'ed be using the GSX600 pickup setup.

Before any one says ... put in on the front wheel or put it on the rear wheel,
I know that already.

Has any one done this?
What is that rubber used for inside the sprocket cover?

I am not going to tell you to put it at either wheel, but they are the only parts of the bike that will always be moving at "road speed".

OK, after typing that, I realized that the chain will also be moving at a rate that is relative to road speed, but if you ever change your sprocket size, you will have to recalibrate your speedo.

The rubber is on the inside of the cover to help quiet down the noise of the chain going over the sprocket.

There is a reed switch speed pickup inside of your speedometer for Turn Signal auto cancel (TSCU). It creates a 12V square wave proportional top speed.

Use it as an input to your electronic speedo.

Duh, I realize you are probably getting rid of the Lunch box?

If a clean installation is the primary goal you should use a GPS speedo and have no wires at all.

GPS is not precise enough.
I found something but I'm keeping it a secret until i get it to work.

0.2 m/s ( 1/2 mph) not good enough? And that is not accuracy that is just random noise. It is close to zero mean error.

Never bothered to take a closer look at GPS. But I did now and it looks interesting. Will be doing more research.

Sorry, I mentioned anything. In your research make sure you understand the difference between uncertainty, accuracy and dynamic response.

For typical GPS they are 0.2 m/s, 0.001 m/s , various descriptions.

And the Hz polling rate. The higher the rate the more precise the readings get.
They are also quite expensive.

I dont think I'll be going GPS Speedo. To expensive.
I'll try to get my idea to work. If it does it will be cool!
