    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Magneto for GS1000

Going vintage racing with my 78 GS1000E and want to install a magneto system. I'm reading a 1979 article on Wes Cooley's bike and it says they used a Kokusan Denki CDI ignition powered by a magneto on the left side. The company still exists but I'm not finding much info on which of their magneto systems will work or if they even make one anymore for this bike. Has anyone done this mod and/or can offer some advice? Many thanks!

Adding a CDI would be a major expense and significant undertaking. There are way easier and simplier ways to add an electronic ignition system to your bike, although I"m not sure if adding a modern Dyna S or 2000 system would violate vintage racing rules. If you find some CDI info please post it here so we can watch from the cheap seats.

They do it to remove the charging system and decrease spinning weight of the rotor and improve left hand ground clearance. Well worth it for a racer.

PM sent to First Timer. The Dynatech CDI is available lots of places, just do a search. I think I got mine from Z1 Enterprises (very helpful folks). If I find a magneto system, I will post it. Thanks, all.

Dyna S and 2000 are not CDI. Do they make something else that fits a GS?
 
If you're looking for a self generating ignition system for a racebike - ie lose the battery, some of the ignitions available in the UK should be of interest.
Have a look at electrexworld.co.uk - there are others too. A 4 cylinder system is just a 180 deg twin with twin lead coils or like a Boyer, in series.

Plenty of GS based racebikes around the world are running with either no alernator or a cut l/h end on the crank and total loss ignition. This is adequate for most racing. Generally the more sophisticated battery powered ignitions draw more current than say a basic Dyna.

I often wish my clients had a bigger budget - I'd be fitting self generating ignitions to a lot more motors.....
