My 78 1000 came with an older Martek ignition unit.

Been having some running problems http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?233046-A-78-1000-running-problem and an wondering if it's going bad.Even if it isn't I've just found the Martek disables the advance unit which strikes me as odd.
Thinking of getting a Dyna S or even going back to points that I hate. What I need to know is will a Dyna S need the points plate or is it a replacement? The Martek means I have no points plate so if I need one I'd like to know.Still have the advance unit so that's not a problem.

Does anybody know why the Martek disables the advancer like this?Electronic advance?

The Dyna has its own plate

3 screws, 3 wires - if you're really anal it may take you 30 minutes to have it up and running

Plus, you forgot the Maxi Dwell. Got one of those tucked away somewhere

Thanks T and kdo58,Was pretty sure that was the case.I already have on oddball ignition so I'll pass on the Maxi Dwell thanks:distress:If anybody can tell me more about about the weird in the Martek I'd like to know, just for my own curiosity.Looks like it will be binned for a Dyna S.

I can't see the Martek disabling the advance mechanism. That would mean they would have to build an advance curve into the unit.

Do the weights still move after the rotor is mounted to the advancer?

Martek was never that reliable so switching it for a Dyna-S is smart.

No Dale there are lobs on the weight that fit in the slot on the hub pinning the weights solid.I guess the put in some kind of advance but am asking if anyone knows.

Guessing it's been there a while but I no longer trust it at all.Thinking of putting up as wanted ad for a used Dyna as getting new isn't possible for longer than I want this bike off the road:(

Greg, if the unit locks the advancer in place then it would have to have the advance curve built in. It cannot operate with an high initial base timing necessary in order to give the proper spark advance at higher rpm's. It would have a great difficulty upon cranking.

A timing light would give you the answer in a quick second.

At this point it isn't running good enough to even get a timing light on it:upset:Heck it isn't running at all.May have pulled out the wires though.

Got a Dyna DS3-2 from a member a a great price.Only problem is when I went to put the timing light on to adjust it the light was dead:rolleyes:Blew out my circuit tester on 120V:frog:
