Masking Tape on Pods

I've been hearing people say you can put a thin layer of masking tape on your pod filters as a quick fix instead of reaming the carbs to a bigger jet size. Is this bull****? It sounds like bull****...

Some pods, especially those like Emgos and Chinese knock offs don't provide much ,if any, air restriction or filtering. Its like running without them. If your carbs are not rejetted richer to compensate then you won't be running right and you'll end up burning plugs.

Wrapping them with tape to cut down the airflow will help but its no real fix. Buy better pods like K&N or Ape. If money is an issue, you can buy filter foam and stuff the pods with them just run a piece of wire through the sides of the pods and the foam to keep it in place. Works well enough.

Note also that filter foam needs to be oiled to work properly.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
spyug

Quick fix - no

Temporary test? - yes

As Spyug says, if you have to tape, you need to rejet and readjust your carbs

I don't know why anyone would go to pods if they didn't understand and enjoy the process of jetting the bike correctly. I don't know why anyone would buy crap pods that don't filter and won't run right anyway.
But they keep on doing it.

You're just getting old. :p

No **** people do this? Thanks guys. I bought the bike with the pods on it, knew as soon as I fired it up that he hadn't rejet the carbs. But I got it on the cheap, and have done a pod conversion before, so I wasn't particularly worried about it. (did however demand to knock off 50 bucks from the asking price) I might try the foam idea while I'm waiting for my buddy to get back to me with the reamers. I'd a shame to waste this wonderful February weather!

I've seen multiple layers of t-shirt sleeves used for this purpose in a pinch, and I believe it was coffee filters I saw once on a bike(not sure how this held up to fuel spray back over time).

Tape is the professional way to do it.
I'm only saying that because I've seen people use socks for an air filter.

Just what are you "reaming"???

Hopefully you are not enlarging the jets.

It only takes one small burr on the side of the reamer to make your jets much larger than you anticipated, and there is NO going back.
Add in the "fun" factor of having jets with the wrong number stamped on them and you are only adding a LOT of confusion to the mix.

You would be FAR better off spending just a few bucks and getting an assortment of jets that will be about the proper size, then you change them intelligently. I have not checked recently, but I think that jets are about $3 each, so $12 for a set of 4, try a size or two on each side of your 'target', and you will have several possibilites for about $50.

But, really, you're going to ream a precision instrument that costs $5?
LESS!!

A quick search showed me this page at Z1, which shows them for $1.75 each. :D

That is a lot less than I mentioned earlier. A set of four jets would be $7.00. You could get SEVEN SETS for the $50 I mentioned a few posts ago.

Solder and the set of drill bits that I have, and you can fine tune ANY carb/engine combo. :-$

...and have yet to have the solder ever ever lose the desired spec. ;)

Ok, so no to reaming the jets. But what about the slow jet? I can replace the main jet, but isn't the slow jet press fit? Or do I not need to replace it?

The pilot jet screws in, that's what the slot in it is for

Hm. I assumed they were press fit because thats the way they were on my CB.

Steve, these main jets will fit my carbs specifically? I don't see any model numbers.

God I hate asking stupid questions.

My Cortina has some re-drilled jets on the Delorrto's. The engine builder, Jay Ivey,

http://iveyengines.com/Aboutus.htm

drilled them when it was being run on the dyno. Its a common practice, but I wish they would have put new jets in instead. I can't remember what I did with the paper detailing the changes they made.

If they had been Webers, they would have had the jets there.
