Matte black pipes

Ok, I saw this and nearly wet myself over that exhaust setup. Ok, the whole thing! boioioioing!

So how do you get pipes to look like that? Can you have the existing ones painted & coated? And does that affect the performance of the bike at all?

Do you paint right over the chrome? I would think it would flake off. I may be mistaken.

How scratch resistant is the paint on chrome and what sort of prep do you need..

It says power-coated, so I'm assuming they used something like a Jet Hot Coating. Search online for it.

You can paint it with heat resistance paint as already mensioned. In the UK there used to be a product called Zebrite which is a lead blacking for the old grates and ranges. I used to use that on the exhaust to give it a black lead shine.

If you do a web search for Zebrite grate black you will find replacements Stovax. ;-)

I got mine at http://www.mcmaster.com. It's rated at 1200 degrees. The last time I bought it was $5.56 for a 12 oz rattle can.

When I got the bike it had a Kerker header which was rusted chrome and looked like crap. I sand blasted it until the chrome and rust was all gone. I painted it without primer as directed on the can. It looks great now. It's easy to touch up too.

Hi I used a sander and sand paper to knock the shine off my pipes to give the paint a good key to grip to and stopped any flakeing

The pipes were never chromed, so all it took was sanding (a lot) and prep work. Painted with High Temp Paint. This was taken right after I painted them so they were not at temperature yet. They are now a slight greyish color right at the engine but still looks good. Next winter ($ depending) will probably ceramic coat the exhaust. Will post newer pictures with specs on this bike this weekend due to a couple of requests. Thanks for all the kudos. I really enjoy this bike a lot.

IMHO,ceramic coating is the way to go. Although more expensive than paint, it is a durable finish that will last for years, with minimum maintenance .Most painted systems will grey a little over time, esp at the header, and need repainting every couple years to look their best. If you do go the ceramic route, request them to shoot some on the inside of the header as well.

I painted mine with high temp and it doesn't stay on the greatest so I'm going to header wrap mine with black header wrap...should look cool...just another idea

I can't wait. Gotta get that tank mounted first. And no, I'm not going to leave the Hardly Ableson logo on it.

Those are some durn sexy pipes, Zeroaffinity. But HOOBOY!$433! I didn't pay that much for my whole bike! 8-[ :-D Can't wait to see the complete rebuild. What made you pick those pipes instead of just painting yours black, or having them ceramic coated?

I wonder if those pipes would fit an 82 GS650G.....

I bought the Jardine also for my new project. They come matte black. I plan on ceramic coating the inside and also putting a ceramic clearcoat on the outside. That will shine them up a bit a give them some gloss, and they should stay that way.

I also got the Jardines for my hot rod. Had 'em ceramic coated inside & out before installation. They look great, and sound awesome!
